EGR is something you should do research about because its sort of the proverbial double-edged sword. It keeps combustion chamber temps lower but basically reduces your power a notch. A clogged EGR tube will cause some mild attention-getting disturbances but nothing too serious. However, consistent deviation from manufacturer specifications can cause other problems and ecu codes. So to answer your question yes it affects performance (but not much), and you should clean it, because a clogged situation will mess with your vehicle's ecu operating program parameters.

OK. Here are my pictures.
FWIW, I didn't cut or use a hacksaw on anything. Whatever works best for you is what you should do.
