O2 Sensor Angle and Reading.

I am replacing the stupid s-pipe after my cat later this week and I had a question about the O2 sensor angle.

This is the piece I am replacing. On my '98 the O2 sensor bung is in the middle of that s-pipe on the top side, with the wires about 1/2 inch from the heat-shield.

With an increase in diameter as well as a staight pipe in place of the s, there will not be enough room for the O2. I am planning on putting the bung in a position similar to the Stillen b-pipe.

I have heard (a rumor?) in the past that an O2 sensor must be at an angle to function correctly however I have never heard of anyone running a Stillen b-pipe having O2 sensor problems related to it's mounting position.

Any opinions from people that have eliminated the s and have the O2 after the cat?

Thanks for any insight.

on stock 97-98s maybe 99s, doesn't the O2 sensor behind the cat. just go straight (perpendicular to) into the b-pipe? IIRC, without looking

also the front O2s in the y-pipe, i'm sure those go straight into the pipe also, with no angle.

so i would say no, it doesn't need to be at an angle.

An o2 sensor is pretty much a thermo couple. It basically measures the temperature of the exhaust, they are not picky about position, if you keep it in the same general area in relation to the cat, you will be fine.

Alright, then the stock location is probably just best for keeping the O2 sensor free of road grime and moisture. If I have the room I will try to keep it there for that very reason, otherwise I will rotate it to the best position.

Is that the stock position or an aftermarket/custom setup?

99se5speed- greghome.com has lots of great pictures, he took them when the car was fairly new as well so you can actually tell where every nut and bolt are supposed to be and what they look like.
