2nd car or Mod the max? NEED HELP!

Well i went to go get my frontend checked today and the guy who was working on it had a 1991 Taurus SHO Plus (5speed,centerforce clutch,230hp{i think}) He said i could have it for $1000(I worked my verbal negotiating skills for thar price,no homo)
the paint was flawless, looked brand new....

Looks EXACTLY like this same color and all:

NOW the problem is, i was planing on working on the max for the winter. Either a 3.5 swap or turbo then swap later on.

So, the question is,
-Get 2nd car and mod the max slowly(budget limited)

-Forget the 2nd car and turbo the max and maybe add a 3.5 swap later on

-OR just do a 3.5 swap and be happy

I say use that $1000 on the max. Drop the 3.5 then do your other mods. Dont turbo then 3.5....The max is a much nicer car and much newer IMO. You'll have more life out of the max.

Forget the SHO, period. Turbo is nice, and so is a 3.5, but doing a turbo then a 3.5 is quite expensive. If you have deep pockets and dont mind the cost, or having things done twice, go for it. But i'd stick with one or the other. Turbo, or 3.5...or a turbo 3.5 ftw

IMO, i'd do swap and some mods , You'll scare ppl wit the turbo but wit a 3.5. they really dont know whats coming .... and its probably less to maintain..

since im currently modding both my maxima and my sho at the same time(dont do it, uve been warned)i feel i might have some insight worth writing.

anywho. shos can be made fast but itll cost a lot more than a max, and a 3.5 4th gen will stomp a na sho in the quarter.

the sho is not a car i recommend to anyone wanting to keep any money in their pockets, i love my SHO, had it forever, honestly its been just as reiable as my maxima. just way more costly when soemthing little breaks, since "everything" is SHO specific and then it jacks the price way up.

the reason i mod both cars is that, well honeslty my max cant keep up with my sho, in anyway yet. but my max is my daily driver, and my sho is for the track only(im working on it, im learnign as i build). imo the sho outhandles my 5th gen, i imagine 4th gens are a lil better, but with a few suspension mods, a sho can be made to handle very well.

i think thats enough outta me.

Thats the samething my brother told me, that's what kind of made me go away from the idea. But hearing what you said, and the fact that you OWN a SHO means alot more so; I'm 100% sure I'm not getting it now...

sadly the 91 sho plus is the rarest, typly the fastest SHO out there. its like equal of the 95gxe 5spd maxima. lightest with the same power.

the main reason the sho was cool was cause of its sleeperness. i find very few people that know what one is.

the car looks to be in great shape. id buy it and sell it on shoforum.com. maybe make a few bucks.. too bad im low on funds, or id pick it up from ya.

honestly, owned a SHO, brother owns a SHO. we both HATE(ed) it but kept them because we put the money into it and that was that. dropped close to 6k on the car in 3 years and sold it for 800 bucks. i know pathetic. but honestly, that engine put up with alot of my **** and i'm proud to say i never blew it, unlike my brother whose on his 3rd engine and 5th tranny. yes. 5th.

maxima has treated me well. no major problems. just brakes, struts, and tires.

forget the SHO; while it's fast as a bastard stock, its VERY EXPENSIVE to mod.

Just do the 3.5 swap, it will be cheaper more reliable and easier to tune than a turbo setup on the 3.0, you also have the benefit of all the aftermarket parts that are available for the 3.5

Good luck!

You'll end up piling alot of money into it if it has any problems. The yamaha motor is nice but has now become very hard to find parts for.

Hi all, Well i know this will get me flamed but, i had a 93 SHO and in my opinion it ran much better then the 93 max se 5spd i have now. The Sho yamaha engine is way smother then the max engine and more powerful, ran great very strong and no damn VTC to worry about. My 93 max is a great car but i am really getting sick of one day its runs great pulls strong, the next day it runs like crap, must be a knock sensor, my motor only has 92,0000 on it. The Place where the max is much better is the chassis, it is alot stronger the then SHO and feels much tighter with fewers groans and rattles. But like somebody said the SHO parts are getting hard to find and are expensive, but if i had a extra $1000.00 i would buy the SHO.....

You're in the wrong forum. This is the 4th generation forum (1995-1999) with maximas equipped with the VQ30DE motor.

forget the SHO (nothing but problems), keep ur auto, put some money into VB mod, and do 3.5. You will be more than happy with the 3.5, your only problem is going to be on how to take care of the transmission, and for that you can PM me or look up mods for the auto. if you do 3.5, i really doubt your going to want to boost, specially when you see that your having alot of traction problems . just do 3.5, prepare the tranny for it, and call it a day. and if u want even more power, get an EU afterwards .

LOL, I bet.... One question.. me and my older brother were talking today about my race with a 6th gen(stock) I won off the line through the top of 2nd gear atleast 4 times. Once i hit that horrible 3rd, he walked around me everytime... i guess since 3rd is such a long gear.... ANYWAYS;would swaping in a 5spd auto help this (i.e. 2002+ maxima tranny) Since its an extra gear, therefore making 3rd shorter?
