worklog: E39 retrofit

so as some of you know...i am in the process of retrofitting E39 projectors into the 1 peice cefiro headlights.

This is my worklog:

weekend 1:

so i got all the parts together and started the process of cutting everything up. I dont have pics of the process but what i have so far are the projectors in the headlight. I still have to put on a proper shroud and bezel which should be coming in next week. and the wiring should also be coming in next week from HomerMAC. Everything else is set.

here are some pics..
LEFT

RIGHT

BOTH Side by side

BOTH Stacked

I cant wait for them to be hooked up...im sooo excited

yeh this is my first time. i hope aiming goes well i just tried my best to match the position and angle of both the projectors and i got it almost exactly right. The shrouds are almost mirrors of each other...i made only one template and both were perfect fits of each projector so that should mean that they are about even angles and what not.

I cant wait to get the harness and plug them in.

yeh im also wondering the same thing. Im thinking about painting the inside of the shroud some sort of reflective paint...maybe that will help put more light out of the projector.

oh well...we'll see what happens.

okay so i should have the headlights up and running this weekend.

now one problem i just realized...I have the Gen 3 hella ballast but they do not have the plug to connect them to a power source. Can i find these plugs at a local store or something or will i have to find the specific plug from ebay or something?

I believe they utilize a 9006 harness, but someone on hidplanet.com can verify.

What shrouds are you using? OEM E39 shrouds? I have 1 E46 single xenon shroud that survived my accident, but trying to find another single one is proving a little more difficult, and these oem e39's look real nice.

as far as the plug...i bought some on ebay so im good in that department.

and as far as the shroud goes...i am not sure what BMW they are from. i know for sure they arent the e39 or the e46.

and i should have the projectors up and running this weekend...so tune in!

hey the package came back to me, I dont think the handwriting was legible on my part. sorry ill send it with that 2-3 day mail. so you get it by the middle of hte week or so. its saturday now. Deeply sorry about this. Its the second time it happened to me within last two weeks.

you can wire em up to the stock harness for now. Its not gonna cause any damage unless you run it on the stock harness for prolonged period meaning like months on.

I hate to be the reason your project gets held up.

well i got some good news and some bad news...

the good...i put in the headlights this weekend and it looks amazing!! the light is just unbelievable!! i even modded them to give off more light and have more color in the cutoff line.

what i did was bend the cutoff shield closer to the bulb...closer gave more blue and purple and further gave more orange and yellow. i also tilted the bulb slightly down by putting a couple layers of tape on the bottom edge of the bulb. this gave a lot more light all over and more color on the cutoff.

i am very pleased with the output.

now for the bad news...
1. i didnt have my camera and dont have any pics...and i wont have any untill 5 days from now.

2. aiming laterally is giving me a hard time. the right headlight is okay i guess but the left points well...left. i think ill have to open them up again to get the aiming correct. so right now they are pretty much pointing straight ahead and not converging...this gives a lot of width but i think it might be bothersome to oncoming traffic.

3. cefiros are insanely difficult to install...its still not perfect. i have to go back and redo the mounting holes to get them to sit flush.

but i love the new lights...ill get pics up a soon as i can. which will be in like 5 days.

did you get hte harness eveyrthing work out? LET me knwo kep me posted your the 1st person that i made a sale to on the org.. normally i just give things away.. so i dont want to have a bad rep. heh

and the aiming screws dont help with the aiming?
and yea the left ot right is the hardest part of the retros. a good idea is if you know someone with OEM projectors in ther car.. to park it aganist your garage and then use that to compare. or even just anyother headlight will give you a decent idea of where the hot spot should be. Hope it works well for you.

keep me posted.

hey, idk if i got the harness yet since im at school right now but i will be going home tomorow so ill know by then and i will hook it up and see if they work good.

as far as aiming screws...im having a lot of trouble since i think i spaced out the projectors too much. i was trying to get away from the bug eye look but i dont think its working so i will open them up tomorow and re allign them. Im also thinking about painting the housing black so i can just do both when i have it open.

the other thing is that the cefiros are sooo hard to put in. i am literally having a harder time putting in the cefiros than i did with the retrofit!

Harness from HomerMAC came in...but i havent put them in yet. Ill probably do it tonight if i have time...finals week is next week thats why.

first impressions are WOW...amazing.
-came in very well packed and even in a nissan box
-quality is very good...all wires wrapped in wire loom and the rubber covering the wire is a thick and durable material, i think its to withstand higher temps.
-instructions are awesome...every step in install is laid out and very easy to understand.

so if they work the way they are supposed to...pretty sure they will!...then everything is perfect. Couldnt have asked for a better product!

HomerMAC wire harness = great product! i highly recommend it!
