Water pump/coolant leakage!

So this morning i wake up and walk to my car. Just as im about to hop in i see a puddle under the passenger side of the car. I Look under the car and there is a steady stream of green coolant leaking. I checked the coolant hose and everything was kool. It turned out the coolant is comming from the water pump. What are my options? How much would it cost to fix? Could i do it this weekend?

Funny that this seems to be happening to a few people simultaneously.

I read over the water pump replacement thing. Doesn't seem too hard but it is tougher to do because it's a cramped area to work in. From what I've read the water pump itself could be fine and it's just the seals that have gone bad but nobody could answer me when I asked how I would know without taking it apart.

Water pump... It costs around 60.00 for one at a O'reillys or Auto Zone.. Here is the link for the write up on this site.. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=308680
I done mine... Onlything is that the rattleing noise appeared after I got it all put back together. I read alot of bulletins on here and I went and picked up a new tensioner and slackside guide today from Nissan so that adds another 63.00 to the total cost... but that just happened to me.. not sure if anyone else has had the same results.. But I would defintly replace the pump to as when I took mine out it was the back oil seal but with space being so limited there was no way that I wanted to have to go back in and do it again if the pump fails. Best advice would be to use the 1/4" drive ratchet as mentioned in the write up... It took about 3-4 hours to replace...

When it's really bad it causes the crank pulley to wobble.

I dont think that you need a gasket... I didn't need one on mine. On the water pump there is two o-rings that keep the water out of the oil and the oil out of the water. As far as a gasket goes they can use some permatex to sure up the water pump access cover and the timing chain tensioner cover... I wonder if they have ever changed a water pump on a maxima before.
Surely they have enough sense to look at a Haynes manual if nothing else... Man I feel your pain... If I would have never looked on here to see the replacement procedure when I fired up the car I would've for sure thought I messed something up.. With all the racket them things make until the oil and the water get flowing.. I wonder if you are going to have to replace the tensioner... I know mine would not be quiet until I just changed it today. Actually I took the spring, the piston and the little pencil eraser looking rubber thing in the old one and it worked like a champ!!!! Sounds like the $422.00 that they said that they were going to charge you has just increased... MAN O MAN...

Ive installed several hundred of those pumps and used 3m silacone w/no comebacks. The tensioner is a good investment,.ive seen them come apart over 100,000 miles & then its engine city.

Trying to locate "weep hole" on 4th gen.

Hi I'm a newbie here, I hope its ok to ask on same subject thread here. I'm having a similiar leak right now. Can't figure where to locate "weep hole" from water pump on 4th gen. DOHC, I know its supposed to be between timing chain cover and block but is it on the belt/pulley face of engine or just around the corner between alternator/ air cond. compressor(front) side of engine, where I can see some leakage accumulating? Is it he 1/2 inch long by 1/8 inch slotlike projection above crank pulley?

More Help on the water pump change out....

Looks like you guys got it together here with this site, glad to contribute.

On the water pump issue, Mishmosh has a superb article here, it will be my Bible on the issue, but I'm still a little foggy on the removal of the right side motor mount. Haynes wants you to support the motor with an engine hoist to do this and I'm thinking that with the other 3 mounts still attached I may not have to add additional support with the hoist while removing and reinstalling the mount. I really don't want to rent a hoist unless I need to, then of course I will if I have to do the job right. Any suggestions here?

Hoist or additional supports aren't needed at all, the three other mounts will support the motor just fine while you take the right side one off.

water pump and timing tensioner complete !

What a pain in the ***! Glad its over and glad I did it! I actually think it runs a little smoother with a little performance enhanced...tell me its possible the timing chain is synched better now...somebody please tell me its true! It seems that way anyway.....maybe its just my joy that the freakin job is over with that makes it seem so much better! One thing for sure the chain rattle is gone!
Catch of the day:YES! I retrieved the timing tensioner piston after it went for a little swim in the oil of the bottom of the timing chain cover! Complete story with pics and do's/don'ts coming soon. Thanks all for your help and guidance. Vince
