strange intermittent clutch problem

Is this our 4th gen's dreaded transmission acting up..

Here's what is happening. Everything will be fine, then all of a sudden when I press the clutch pedal down, I'll hear a loud a grinding sound and feel the grinding/vibrating in the pedal. After a while, or next time I drive, it'll be gone. Then halfway through the ride, or maybe next time, it'll come back. I had a friend push the pedal and I opened the hood and it sounded like the grinding noise was coming from the area circled in red below. I greased it a bit but that didn't help..

Any ideas?

I thought of that, but wouldn't that make a whinning sort of noise, rather than a heavy grinding? Or is the loud grinding also a sign of the throwout bearing crapping out?

Thanks for your help.

well your t/o bearing pushes up against your pp when you push the clutch. Im going with there is something wrong with that part. if you can take the tranny off and look at it.. if you are not able to do that...take it somewhere or wait til something bad happens or nothing happens at all..?

I agree. TOB is most likely the cause. The TOB very close to that spot you circled so that's why you hear it from there (inside bell housing).

Thanks guys. I'll probably take the car today to a shop and have them drop the tranny and take a look to see what's wrong. This morning the sound was gone, as soon as it happens again, I'll go have it looked at and post back with an update.

The whole point is to have 15 'useful' posts. Aska question you need help with, make a comment on a topic, share some info, etc. Doing what you just did will get you banned pretty quick, just a friendly warning.
