headgasket replacement..anyone did?

well my moms 96 maxima blew its headgaskets like almost a year ago
haha
only now i came around to fixing them.

so well, i replaced a maxima engine before same year. for my work. simple, in and out in a day.

now headgasket for my mothers car.

do you have to drop the motor?
im really wondering cause i have been working on it today and so far
i have taken off/removed/unplugged the
main engine harness
ac compressor
alternator
passenger side engine mount
radiator
intake manifold
fuel rail assembly
fuel lines
coolant lines
heater hoses
power steering lines and bottle
plastics underneath and access pannels
crank pulley
tensior pulley for accessory belts
exhaust manifolds
valve covers
cam bolts

basically i can drop the motor out by just removing the axles from the hubs than just drop n slide out from under the car.

BUT

i dont want to do that for i dont have a cherry picker over here. at my work place we have everything i would need. so i would pull the motor for more ease. since i dont, i cant.

so far i have been taking off all the 10mm and 12mm bolts that cover the timing chain.
but since there is sooo little room working there i cant get all the bolts out
=/
im also having problems with the bracket for the motor mount that bolts to the cover. the two long 17mm bolts. u know if u try to take it out it hits the mount to the car and u cant get the bolt/assembly out.
is there a way to take it off with out dropping the motor?

neone have any pics or write ups just incase
thanks

So you are basically asking if you can remove the head with the motor in the car?

Seems crazy that they both went, and crazier that it was (driven?) a year. Are you sure the head isn't warped at all?

just go get the cherry picker from work or rent one from autozone or somewhere. I dont know if you can do it in the car. I would think it will go much faster out of the car. Also check the head to make sure it isnt warped like fr33way mentioned just to be safe. if you need an fsm try phatg20.net

No we don't need a write-up. The procedure is documented in both the haynes manual and FSM. Not really all that hard.

HG are a ***** when they go, cause if you want it done right the first time and ONE time you gotta ge the block decked, the head remachined, make sure that everything lines up just right.

I think a good writeup with high quality color pictures would be appreciated, otherwise you can't really beat the Haynes one.
