Locked ignition key!

Temp went down below 20 deg. overnight now I can't turn the ignition key to start! Tried to turn Steering wheels left to right and vice versa at the same time turning the ignition key but still won't turn. The question now ,is it safe to use WD40 on the ignition keyhole ? Will wd40 short the ignition?. Any remedial measures to be taken in case wd40 won't work?

Thanks Histo

Why do you think it is because it is frozen? Was there water in there or something?

If you think it was the cold, heat it with a hair dryer.

I don't know. Maybe there's something wrong to the locking mechanism bet. steering in relation to the ignition(key). I really don't know , that's why I asked the 2 questions..1. if safe to wd40 on ignition...2.what to do if wd40 doesn't work? Anybody?

I wouldn't spray WD40 in the ignition. Even though it went below 20 degrees the ignition is still inside the car.

id go with fr33way on this one. definatley heat it with something, hairdryer is probably the best. and if that doesnt work.
id just try and rotate the wheel again before the hair dryer, but be super gentle with it. ive had times when it would lock up and give me the smallest space to start it back up.

Thanks everybody!!! I tried everything ,push the car back and forth, graphite powder, wd40 ..no go!!!. The one that works ..driving or TAPPING(lightly) the KEY with the handle of screwdirver drivingthe key deeper to the ignition!!! Info from google!! I luv internet ..Imagine how I have to spend for the tow, parts and labor that may not even solve the problem.

Sounds like ignition switch if it's not starting even after the key is turned.

I have this same problem right now. I have to be turning the steering wheel and trying to turn the key on my 00 maxima. I have sit there for about 5 minutes doing so till finally it the key turns and then I could turn on the car. Really wierd, i dont know if I can buy the switch, or I have to take it to the dealer.
