I've been looking into doing alot of my 97 Max's 60k tune up myself and have been reading up on all the tools/parts I would need. I know everyone recommends NGK as the preferred style of spark plugs, but are THESE the ones that everyone is talking about? The reason I'm a little bit unsure is because I've read that people are spending close to 8-9 bux a pop on OEM replacement platinum spark plugs and was able to find these for less than 3 bux each online. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, is there a big enough difference between platinums and iridiums to warrant the price being two times as much?

these are the preferred ones if you are going copper. if not, get the dealer set (PFR5G-11 ) or some iridiums. the "part finder" link will show you which ones.

 

Ahhhh so I take it the dealer ones are actually the laser platinum and not g-power platinum version right?

 

correct. but again the concensus is that it is more economical and you get equal or better performance with the coppers. the iridiums (denso or NGK) are said to give both better performance and longevity.

 

But are Iridiums really all that to warrant that much of a price difference when say compared to the coppers?

 

i havent used them, but i cant see them making that much difference. and they only last about twice as long but cost more than twice as much. I would go to Autozone and get the coppers. cant beat a $12 plug change that runs as good or better than factory.

 

I'm using the G-Powers with no issues. They're also platinum, so the question comes down to the amount of platinum in the plug.

 

Platinums, not iridiums should be used, unless you dont mind changing them every 20-25k...I speak from experience with all of the above (iridiums were not in this car, but i reccomend against them unless you have alot of boost)

Iridiums should be used for moderate+ usage of NOS or moderate+ amounts of boost. Not for N/A or very low boost or small shots of NOS.

Even in the cases of low level boost/NOS, you would use 2-3 step cold Coppers.

Get the OEM plats

For the record, has anyone ever found NGKs in the Espanol-Zone (Autozone). Seems like they are Bosch fans there.

 

None of the autozone I went to ever carry the NGKs.

 

I know NAPA carries NGK brand. They use a 4 digit sku# so depending on what you are wanting to run here are the numbers.

All of these numbers are from NGK and are for '95-'01 Maxima's.
