back 2 stock y-pipe & no hp loss

i don't understand. since going back to my stock y-pipe from a Cattman Y i've changed my oil (5k on Mobil 1 Tri-Syn) & swapped out my test pipe for the stock cat, that's it (also relocated my battery to the trunk, but thats unrelated). the car feels the same. my butt-dyno is caliberated to about plus or minus 5 hp so a 10-12 hp drop should have been noticable.

the only thing i can think of is that my Max is a Cali spec, so even w/ a y-pipe, i still have a huge pre cat on the front bank of the engine.

do Cali specs make comparable hp w/ y-pipes as fed spec Maximas? i've remeber an org member once mentioned to me the that putting y-pipes on 5th Gens is point less, headers are the only worth while option. whether that true or not, isn't the 4th Gen Cali Spec exhaust (before primary cat) designed similar to that of the vq30 5th Gen's?

Looking for hard evidence to support or oppose my less than optimal but-dyno...

No dyno sheet no care ....but the whole Cali deal might make a little sense. Not to support your theory, but to support the fact that the y-pipe might not give as much gain when comapred to a fed spec Mac...But then again do I know ..

Well this thread is pretty much worthless without a chart.

I am about to put in amber corners to see if I make some gains.

NmexMAX, thanks for the post. i really do think Cali Max's don't get to see the full potential of a y-pipe because of that precat, but just like you said, WTF do i know?

MaximaSE96, true that y-pipe are proven to give gains and there's alot to support that claim, but to what extent on Cali Specs. being that the Cali y-pipe dimensionally is basically half of what the fed spec is, not to mention my recent experience, makes me kinda wonder...

Fr33way™, be sure to post a "chart" with before and after hp & torque. i heard ambers are awesome in the mid range and raise your rev limiter!

shadyonedeath, already sold it to make some money for the latest header by Cattman.

An aftermarket ypipe on a 99 should give less gains than an aftermarket ypipe on a 95-98. On the 99 one of the pre cats is in the header and when you put on an aftermarket ypipe you dont eliminate that front pre cat in the header. On 95-98 maximas, both pre cats are in the ypipe so when you put on an aftermarket one you eliminate both. Thats why people with 99-01 maximas convert to the 95-98 fed spec front header to eliminate that pre cat.

A good set of headers are the best exhaust mod, even on a 3.0L. IMO.

On the 99's actually not all of them are cali spec. I was fortunate enough to have a 99 that is NOT cali spec...just thought i'd clear that up.

and about the Y pipe...you know, you're not the first person that has said that, there was a thread here a couple months back discussing the same topic.

if you didn't notice, we're only talking about cali spec 99's. if you don't have a cali spec 99, your good.
