I am in desperate need of tires. But from learning lots of things from all of you I now want 17's to replace my stock 15's with hubcaps. I am looking at either Borbet type T or type R rims with Dunlop SP5000 tires in size 234/45-17. I would like to know how these rims will do with salt and snow?? I tend to wash my vehicles a lot in the winter and have never had problems. But I have never had after market rims. Will these be OK and are they pretty strong for Potholes and such?? Lastly I think I already know the answer but will a 17x8 fit well on a 96 GXE??

You want to go with wider low profile tires for snow & ice?
That's gonna give you less traction. I've got 235/45/17's on now and there's no way they're gonna see snow. No way my 17x8 Borbet's are gonna see salt either here in Chicago.

I took TireRack's advice and actually go DOWN a size (-1) for winter. Narrow tires will actually help you cut through snow. Watch Vettes & Camaro's at stoplights on snow & ice. I'll be running either 215/65/16 or 205/65/15 on stock or steel rims soon.

 

17x8 is too wide for winter plus the rims are too valuable to be runing in the winter.
I bought 15" steel rims and snow tires from the rack but in your case you already have 15" so use that in the winter and save you 17" and HP tires for the summer.

 

Howdy All:

You guys make sense but my wife will only allow one set of wheels and tires. So What if I went with something a little smaller like either a 16x7.5 or a 17x7.5??? Would that be better? I have heard that the SP5000 are a good tire for general use??

I to can afford only one set and went with 225/50/16 SP5000s on stock 16in 97 SE rims. The 5000s are great. I hope they will be OK in the snow.

 

I run my 5 spoke (stock) 16's in the winter. also everyone else around here seems to take thier aftermarket rims and tires off for the winter too... the salt isnt to great for them.
