Transmission Problem

So I'm changing my suspension, KSport, and when I loosen the bolts for the strut the entire thing falls over. (Yes, it was supported, don't ask me what happened.) Long story short, the driver's side axle came out. I did get it back in but I'm not sure if it's sealed correctly or not. I'll post pics in about an hour or two and I definitely know I need to refill my trans (5 SPD) but if anyone knows anything, please let me know ASAP.

you will be okay assuming they are in good shape. how did the axle fall out of the transmission? I assume you meant to say the spindle fell once you freed the strut. Assuming the axle was still bolted in place by the 36mm bolt tq'ed to 175ft/lbs + I dont see how it could have feel out. Besides that it did, once its back in, push the axle all the way in, give it some force, and get underneath the car with a light and look, you'll see if the axle isnt fully seated or not.

I assume when the axle popped out a whole lot of gear fluid came out with it too.

The axle seems fully seated to me. I'll check tomorrow again just to be sure. And yes, there was lots of fluid that came out. Gonna do a refill tomorrow and hope for the best.

Augusta,
I have a 97 5-spd, and just 2 weeks ago, as i was taking off from the light, i heard a loud noise. (my transmission is bad, i had been driving for 3yrs, topping of the fluid) I knew the transmission had died. The car moves very slowly and every once in a while, there would be a BIG jerk! if i was pushing the car, it would almost stop while on neutral..
Anyway, i took it to a mechanic and he showed me that the driver side axle had come off. I have never looked into the tranny but from what he said, it is not easy for the axle to come off unless something is broken inside.
Hopefully that is not your case. I recommend testing your car very slowly first after fixing the axle back. try pushing maybe? goodluck

Well I was reading the Chilton manual and apparently, the half-shafts do just come right out. Yes it is a little more involved than the caliper falling over, but that really is the only thing holding it up. I did get under my car and compared to the passenger side half-shaft, the driver's side is in the same position and distance. GL4 here I come.

I'm good to go. I'll try high speed later today but 40 MPH and no problems.
