Anyone ever shipped an Automatic Transmission

Hey guys, I am in the process of buying an automatic transmission for my dad's 95 auto. For some reason, I read on here that the 4th gen auto tranny weighs~120lbs, but when my seller went to get it shipped it weighed in at 205 lbs. So now FedEx/UPS wants it to be shipped freight, and that will cost more than $300, while if it was 120lbs, it would cost around $120.

Has anyone here ever shipped an auto tranny? Any suggestions for me?
Its being shipped from Tucson, AZ to Los Angeles, CA.

thanks guys

My friend shipped a 5-speed once for I think just under $100. With the trans, the wood pallet and the box it weighed in at around 110-120lbs. Maybe the seller has it on a big pallet?

Look into shipping it with DHL, thats what my friend used and it was pretty cheap.

Too bad I didnt know you were looking for a trans sooner. I have a LSD auto that ive bene tyring to sell for a while now, selling it for cheap too.

The manual trans is about 120lbs and the auto is considerably heavier. Tell him to look around for frieght prices. Fedex UPS freight will be the most expensive

You've been told wrong. The manual trans is 109lbs give or take a couple, the auto is quite a bit heavier though it's not 200lbs. My guess would be that the auto trans is in the 140-150lb range but I can't say with certainty.

Anything on a pallet automatically goes freight. Anything over XXX weight automatically goes freight, you'd have to find out what that weight is for your carrier. There are ways to get around that weight limit (i.e. tell them its lighter than it is and have them pick it up, but it's got to be in a sealed cardboard box). It's somewhere around 150lbs. We ship 130-140lb transmissions via regular ground every day at work, and I know we're borderline.

If you just bought the trans from a salvage yard or something they are not going to have the means to ship it in a cardboard box I'm pretty sure, it'll go on a pallet most likely - which means it's getting shipped freight.

You could look up some discount freight carriers on google, I did this and had a hood shipped to me for $160 rather than the $375 or whatever Fedex/UPS wanted to ship it via their freight service.

What he did was bolt it down to a piece of plywood, then put it in a box. Right now we are looking to ship through a freight company (ABF).

For the suggestions above to get around it, dont they always want to weigh anything they are going to ship?

If I were you and it was going to cost $300+ just to ship I would consider going to pick it up. Offer to meet them halfway or somewhere inbetween. CA to AZ cannot be that far...

They make heavy duty plastic crates that are formed to fit these trannies. Go to a few dealerships and ask to use one if they have extras. I did this and had to pay a $100.00 deposit.
Front wheel chrysler trannies are very close in size so check out their dealerships if necessary.
