04+ Gauge Cluster in 4th Gen

I found a 2004 Gauge cluster for $25, but I did not get a dash harness with it. My buddy wants to try (actually he wants ME to try) to install it in his 96 Max. Question: Has anyone attempted a 6G cluster in a 4G? I know the 5G cluster works, because I has one in before I did my VQ35 install. Should I mess with hunting down a harness to splice her up, or should I sell her on eBay? I know the odo likely will not work along with the coolant temp, but he has an EGT so he doesn't care.

I think the cluster looks really clean. I'm debating trying it in my car and telling him to screw off... but I have too much in progress on her just now. That would be kinda far down the list. I'd rather mess up his car.

Any help, knowledge or suggestions would be helpful.

It is a lot of work, but I am sure its possible. I think you would need a new dash and nothing would match up unless you cut out spaces for the airbag...ect. Why spend all the time and money tho. IMO invest in performance upgrades.

I should have specified. I am not worried about the spatial clearances... I have the cluster in hand and can tell that on my own. I am not afraid of fabrication.

I was primarily referring to the electronics of the swap. I do not know thing one about the 6th gen ECU and gauge cluster differences between the 4th and 6th gen... or for that matter the 5th and 6th. I know that the ECU should be similar, likely the fuel maps are different accounting for increased horsepower. I did not know hoe the ECU outputs to the cluster differed. Sorry, I should have been more specific. The cluster looks very clean and would be a nice aesthetic upgrade IMO.

I'm hoping to use his car as a guinea pig to see if I want to hassle with it on mine. I like a lot of Nissan's styling cues... just not all from one model. ie I like the M35 tail lights, 2003 Max headlights, 350z rear turn signals on the A32 (I have the tails and turns, but not installed for a long while). I like the S15 headlights, R34 tails on the 240SX. We are also going to try to fit the new 07 G35 headlights on the 240Z... once I can afford them. The geometry looks nice, but I am not a huge fan of retro. We were toying with the idea of FX45 tail lights on the 1600 as well, but I'd have to see them in a non-photoshoped, in-person way before seeing if I even like it.

Regardless, I like unique and it has rubbed off on my buddy. Does anyone have a suggestion?

this doesn't help your situation, but do you have any pictures of all that stuff on your max?? Sounds very interesting.

The 04 gauge cluster is nothing more than a vehicle information display. Notice there is only one small electrical connector on the back compared to the three on the 4 & 5G.

The A/C amp takes all the inputs (tach, speed, ECT, etc) and sends the signals to the cluster over a couple of data lines.

So unless you are planning on doing a partial CAN implementation in your vehicle, the cluster is not of much use to you.

Being that I do not know what a CAN implementation would ential and do not want to figure it out for someont other than myself, I'll tell him that he's up **** creek.

4x4MAx here's the 5Gen heads on my Max. I do not have the M35 tails on, as that is going to require some serious work. Wife willing I'm going to do the Axxess install first... and that will be in the multi-year range I think. I just buy parts when my spiders find them cheap and keep them till I have time to mess with them.

And here are some of the Silvia from awhile ago. I need to take some after the frontend and engine swap.
