Code reader for 96

I bought an OBD-2 code reader only to find that it does not fit my 96. I looked at an OBD-1, but it said it only worked on Nissans to 93. What code reader do I need.

Thanks,

John

OBD-II is for your 96. You must be mistaken. What brand and model did you buy?

I will have to check the brand tonight. It fits my son's 97Saturn and my wifes 99 Breeze, but it is not even close for my Max.

Which plug were you trying? You probably went after the Consult connector, not the OBD-II. No idea on a '96, but on a '95 Consult is in the fuse box and OBD-II is on the passenger side next to the ECU.

are you sure it was the obdII connector and not the consult(which is for factory specific scan tools)?

all 96 and newer cars have standardized OBDII connectors. they must be on every car under the driverside dash. look again, im sure its there.

I've seen the consult in the fuse box
OBDII close to where the hood release is located
and a 3rd one on the passenger footwell. I'll take a pic when I get home...

I think you guys are right. I think I am trying to connect to the consult. I will look again when I get home. I didn't realize there were two different ports.
Thanks,
John

no, he is right. on the 94.5/95 models there is an OBD II port on the passenger side behind the dash to the left of the glove box.

96 and newer have consult in fuse box and OBDII under driverside dash. 95 and before have OBDII(if so equiped) on passengers side.

You got it.

I was trying to connect to the consult in the fuse box. OBD is under the dash a bit to the right. Scan said I had no code errors, but the CEL is still on. I checked all fluid levels etc and found nothing wrong.

This started because I the tach stopped working, followed shortly by the CEL. I also thought that the exhaust sounded different on the way home. Turns out I lost the retainer on the passenger side Y-pipe flex coupler. I am sure the rear O2 sensor is not happy about that. I think the tach problem is independent of the CEL. Any ideas why I have no error code?

Thanks guys for all your help.
