9004/9007 conversion
9004/9007 conversion
*I know JSutter recommended a harness with relays to begin with.*
Like some of the other members who wanted the quick and easy way out, I decided swap wires on the stock harness and hoped to be done with it, but I soon ran into a problem that a few others had as well. The low beam was considerably dimmer with the 9007 that I just swapped into the passenger side than the 9004 on the driver side. I thought maybe the bulb needed a break in period, but I had strong suspicions that the 9007 bulb wasn't getting enough power. So I grounded the 9007 bulb to the chassis and hooked up the low beam wire straight to battery as a test and behold, the beam was way brighter than the 9004 on the driver side. So for all you lazy fools out their that had a failure when converting from 9004 to 9007, you need relays to the battery for clean power.

9007 is brighter than 9004. Kind of a given...but yeah IMO it's much better to follow JSutter's idea. I did and light output is very nice. I have no problem with low or high beam. I don't think that cutting and splicing wires is a good way to put in 9007. You're still running stock harness and can't really get any type of upgrade from the 9007. People just do it to say they swapped in the 9007 but get no upgrade in light. As fantasy said, you need those relays from the battery to really get the full power from the 9007.
lol, i see where your coming from with the relays. but people who didn't use them like myslef have seen gains from going to a 9007. Yea i would say in theory you should have light output thru the relays cause of the stronger voltage but 14's volts is what the 9007/9004 was design to run off. So in theory you runing the bulbs off the voltage the bulbs were design to run off of. relays pending on what type just supply a higher voltage. to cut it short you are already at full power without the relays. you are going above and beyond full power with the relays.

a relay takes a small amount of power and creates a larger amount of power. when you turn on the fogs it creates a tiny draw but also you have to understand that the alternator does its job as well. a properly working one will notice the draw of voltage from the fogs and attempt to replace it.
i've done a wall comparsion while i did it. silver 9007 VS silverstart 9004. There was a thicker beam pattern and also one tiny part of glare. it compared to what stutter's pictures were about.
i can see why one would like to use relays and why it would serve a purpose. going from 9004 to 9007 makes me happy but not its lacking.
