Hey guys I was just looking in the how too threads and couldn't find a write up on how to clean the head lamps to make them look as good as new and clear again.

I don't want to buy knew housings but I'm getting frustrated because my head lamps are faded like Sh*t as well as my fog lamps.

Can anyone tell me how can I refurbish them to make em look new again? thanks

 

There is a lens polishing kit you can buy at Advance auto parts and probably many other stores. Follow the directions.

 

The old school trick I heard from somewhere was to use toothpaste- seriously.

Brasso........ and after wetsanding makes Brasso even better.

 

I just did this tuesday night to a chrysler 300m's headlights. I started with 400 grit wetsand paper then i jumped to 1000 grit (it would be better if you had grit sizes in between) then i finished with 1500 grit. Then i used this autosol polishing stuff and a polishing bit attached to a drill and buffed them. Then i used some scratch x stuff on them for a final coat i wiped it in with a rag (i used an ld shirt myself).

I have heard about that headlight polishing kit as well, never tried it but im sure its the same thing. I just bought everything serperately since they did not have that kit available when i did my first headlights. I am probably going to get the kit because i have to finish up the 300m the foglights need to be cleaner. (300m is a friends car that I was working on)

Also you can keep the headlights in the car, and just to be safe you can put masking tape around the body parts to make sure it doesnt scratch the car

Meguaris PlastX ive heard works very good. I bought some and plan on trying it this weekend.

 

if you can get your hands on it, "Carbrite" makes something called "Hot Stuff" , seriously. its a really strong engine degreaser, its good enough to take that yellow stuff off glass headlights, might work for whatever your doing

 

99s do not have glass headlights

 

ik that. im just saying, it does the job cleaning the yellow stuff off glass ones, i dont think it would slack on the nonglass either, carbrite also makes another ridulously strong cleaner that would definately work but i dont want people ****ing up their paint jobs and blaming me

 

I understand....just make sure not to get the Carbrite on your paint or it WILL fade, discolor, ect.

 

Ok I brought some 2000 grit sandpaper, a couple of fresh cloths and headlight compound. I see a difference but I still have that yellow tint. I repeated the process about 4 times and still no dice. Maybe I need some better stuff.

Hey 2damaxx whats the Brasso?

 

start with some higher grit sand paper like maybe 400 or 600 grit and go at it with that for a little, then step up to the 2000 grit and polisher. You have to get that yellow layer off and that involves literally sanding it off. Otherwise the yellow will come right back. The smoother you get it with the polisher the longer it will take for the yellow to come back.

Ditto the Meguars PlastX.

Seems odd to use an abrasive, but it worked wonders. Take the lens off for best results and access to the corners

 

Do you know what auto store I can get the plastX from?
