Hello

Does anyone know anyone in Engineering in Nissan America, or Nissan Japan (that speaks English) I have a very specific engineering ? I want to ask. PLEASE DO NOT FLAME ME, I am a DIY mechanic, and respect those that are also, but,.... I am also and engineer, and recognize that finding the engineer that designed the part I am worried about is better than eduacted guesses.

SO..... I have called the 800 numbers, and will call the Nissan US factory, and then call the Nissan Japan factory, but..... if someone else has all ready BEEN there DONE THAT I would appreciate the input.

Thanks for your advice and support

I think you are going to have a really hard time contacting a actual Nissan engineer but good luck.

What is the part your worried about? I would say about 60% of all parts on the 4-gen has been discussed.

You would be surprised how knowledgable some of the veterans on this BBS are. Post your question and let us have a go at it!

Airbag CPU ? Huge Difference in Cost Post June 98, vs Pre June 98

Airbag CPU needs to be replaced in 1998 Maxima SE built in Feb 1998

Part Number 28556-1L226 June 97 to June 98 Cost=$1338 Canadian. (The exact part I need.)

Part Number 28556-1L825 June 1998 on Cost = $534 Canadian.
(The part I would like to use)

Per Junkyards, they do not distinguish between Pre-June 1998 SE, and Post June 1998 SE when they sell you a "good" airbag CPU. Only thing that matters is that the airbag cpu is from a 1998 per them.

So,,,,, based in the HUGE price difference can anyone tell me why I cannot use the newer Airbag CPU at 1/3 the cost?

Thanks in advance

I can't tell you specifically nor would I want to encourage you to exchange parts between years for something like an airbag cpu. It's pretty common for Nissan or any maker to impliment running design changes to their cars over the years. Even if the body and engine don't change.
I would guess that Nissan decided to use a different cpu and/or different airbag hardware for the upcoming 99' model years. This could be for design/cost cutting or regulation reasons. Seeing that the price is much different, I would say they are not compatible.
To say that the junkyards don't distinguish between the cpus for the 1998 model years doesn't mean much. It probably just means they are not familar enough w/ the car to make that call.
Instead of trying to get a hold of an engineer, I would start w/ the Nissan parts guy at your local dealer. Then talk to one of the master Nissan techs. They should know the differences between the airbag systems.

I believe that the airbag systems are covered under a longer warranty than the other parts of the car, so there may be a chance that this cpu may still be covered under your warranty. Check that out too.

At some point, most cars went to a de-powered

airbag system because too many people were getting injured by airbags. Possibly that might be the reason for the CPU change. Just a thought !
