Advancing odometer

OK, this might seem like a strange question...Can you roll the mileage on a 4th gen odometer forward? My speedo is dying, and I'm thinking about getting a cluster off ebay. I've got 160K on now, and it looks like there are some available with much lower mileage. I'd like to do this legally (and the car looks like it's got 160K anyway). Can I buy a used cluster and roll the miles forward to match what I've got now?

yes, but why would you? i found a cluster for my 95 only 8,000 miles less than my odo had on it so i left it alone. i would get a gauge local, that way if it takes a crap on you you'll get a least a month warranty to return it. at least thats what i got, should'nt need to spend more than 100.00 for that. good luck
