A friend of mine need to replace this resistor assembly because the 1-3 speed setting on the fan doesn't work. If u've replaced this part before how much did you pay for it? The dealer wanted $35 for the part...does that sound too much?

Sounds about right. I paid about $25 for the resistor in my Taurus.

Thanks vmok. My friend ended getting it from a different dealer for $28 so I guess that's the going rate.

Solder repair may be possible

Replacement is the usual remedy. However, one owner noticed a damaged spot on his resistor assembly and repaired it with a soldering gun.

Yeah the resistor on my friend's car had a couple of dark burnt marks on the end and in the middle of the card where you can trace out the circuit(?)'s path. So I guess with little work one could solder back the disconnect paths and save some $.
