What part is that?

I saw a gasket like ring hanging on the passenger side drive shaft (?), as noted in the picture. Anyone knows what that is and what problem I am facing?

Thanks.

could be a retainer clip for the axle. take a picture of it or just take it off and see what happens

It could be a dust shield for the axle steady bearing. Take a look, it had to come from the right or left, it should be easy enough to figure it out.

I got my axle out right now and a new one sitting in a box, so I'll go look.

But check your tranny fluid, because if that seal/ring(whatever) is coming from the tranny, it might have leaked out your fluid. If it's coming from the other direction, it might be something you can just push/hammer back into place against the passenger side axle guide.

Its a dust cover to keep crud from building up against the seal.

I'll lift it up and take a closer look again. Hope it's not from the transmission side. I'll check the transmission fluid level. Thanks guys.

I doubt it's a seal from your tranny. They're a PITA to get out, so I don't imagine one could fall out.

Thank you for the pictures. I believe it is the ring the red arrow pointing to (if there's a platic ring in there).

I don't think it's supposed to be there. It's floating on the shaft, not fixed. I might be wrong about which side it's from. The side of ring facing transmission is smooth and the other side is pretty rough as if it's exposed all along. So it might be from the transmission side, something over the rubber where the shaft goes in.

I'll take some closer pics, but I'm pretty sure you would have to break that ring on the transmission side loose..I can't remember if it's either welded there or a piece of the axle itself.

its not floating anywhere...where that ring is, is right where the last point of the axle slips into the transmission. see how its shiny and no corrosion on the other side of the ring?

its fine and theres nothing to worry about. wish someone else would back me up on this.

Maybe we are talking about the different thing here. I can move it up and down the shaft.

What would be symptoms of a failing axle? The one I replaced a year ago was due to a cracked boot, any other failing factors and symptoms?

It is the dust cover that is supposed to keep crud away from the axle seal. They are just pressed on the axle and can come loose easily. You have to swap them over usually when you buy a new passenger side axle because they are not included. You just have to push it back into position with your hand or in this case, you need to pull it off the old axle and put it in position on the new one.

I see. I'll try to push it back in there. It was replaced by the shop before. Thanks.

I pushed it back to the axle, but it's quite loose and I don't know how long it had been out. I've been having bit of grinding feel through the gas pedal lately when drive the car, but no noise. I am wondering if that's a possible symptom of a failing axle.

Thank you for your help. It was the cover I marked red arrow on your previous picture which is bigger than the ring you refer to. I pushed it back into position but still kind of loose. Don't know if damage is already done to the axle though.

you wouldn' have damaged the axle, just the bearing for the axle guide. Call up raxles and ask Marty if you just pack that area with some axle grease and pound the ring back into place will that suffice, he builds these things and might be able to give you some advice......

I didn't notice the arrow in the little pictures that were posted. If the arrow is pointing to the part you are talking about that is loose, that is NOT the part I was talking about. The part I was talking about is visible in some of the pictures on the left hand side of the axle shaft. Since there have been so many pictures posted of totally different parts I'm not sure which part it is you are referring to now.
