Crank sensor??

So I just got done dumping 1500 into my car getting a clutch kit, cylinders, a new engine mount, and some other random but needed work, and when I go to start it after the shop was done with it it has trouble starting. I'll sit there with the key turned, it will act like it wants to start, give me a little backfire in my exhaust, then after about the third time turning the key it will do a very weak start. I took it back into the shop yesterday and it had thier best mechanic stumped, but they think it may be the crank sensor. The shop is being real cool about it, not going to charge me for service and getting the price on the part as low as they can, but I was wondering if any of you have an idea what may be causing this. Thanks!

I would check the codes myself, and take it from there. A bad CPS will cause that, but it will also throw a code, which can be easily checked.
