car makes a whining sound

Since I bought my 98maxima in December its been making this whining sound from the belt area and I cant figure out what it is.

I've been told it was the AC compressor, Power steering pump, Altenator and belt tensioner. But I cant figure out which one is causing the sound. The sound changes a bit when i turn the AC on. And it also changes a bit when I turn the wheel.(which leads me to beleive its the power steering).

Any help would be apreciated
Thanks

bro my car is making the same noise.. its the ac compressor... have fun replacing it its $300 at the dealer... it sucks

best way to test it is by removing the belt for the ac/alternator... and see if it still makes noise...

When you turn the wheel, the engine is assisting the power steering, which raises RPMs slightly, which changes the pitch of the whining. It's not power steering.

Remove the belt/s and spin the accessories by hand, you should be able to find out exactly what it is that way. A/C compressors changed in ?97? I believe, other than that you can use every thing else from any year 4th gen. Not sure, but I do beleive you can use a 5th gen and possibly a 5.5 gen alternator if you can find one at the boneyard, but please don't quote me on that or get mad at me if I'm wrong.

be carefull with buying compressors... I replaced my clutch, and ordered a 99 compressor off e-bay from an org member to steal the clutch, and the clutch bearing was different... not sure what else, ended up eating it...

Good luck if thats it.

I just had my belt replaced last week, and it is making the sound now, and was not last week, but I am going to let it go for now. I have a gringing pully I need to locate more first...

I have the same problem and

the ac compressor makes sense. when I'm idling in the morning with no AC, the noise is most pronouced.

But if I turn on the AC the noise basically goes away. I thought it was because the rpm's increased a bit.

It is highly frustrating to locate...

that is EXACTLY what happens with my car. The noise drives me crazy. Is anyone sure that its the AC compressor? I would hate to buy the wrong part.

Thanks

yea its the ****en clutch OR the pulley bearing.. more likely the pulley... remove the belt and spin it by hand see if it makes the noise...

i had the pleasure of replacing the pulley today.. what a bi.tch omg its impossible to remove the damn clutch with out having the tool from nissan... i had to tap the holes and make a special bracket to remove the damn thing... not fun..

You "sleep installed" a supercharger bro.. It happened to me too.

Also, are you aware that certain '98s have alternator failure.. You can have it replaced under a recall if your car was produced within a certain timeframe.

I know because I had the same problem and got mine replaced free

i had this issue, i got the AC compressor replaced and it still occasionally makes that noise. i was told that my belt needed to be tightened *shrugs*. not really sure how to permanently get rid of that noise but i did find a solution to make it go away on the start ups. i just applied a little gas and it went away faster.

probably AC pulley bearing...
http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...4&postcount=50

do verify the exact compressor model/bearing size before you buy a bearing. it seems the 4th gen uses several different compressors, even on the 99 model year.

you are wrong. the bearing is pressed flush to the opposite (clutch) end, and it has a hard stop ==> you can't press it "too deep". that doesn't even make sense. the compressor end has a lip that is used to "pean" the bearing in place. the photos clearly show this.

no I am not wrong. that's exactly what the original bearing looked like. the clutch gap is right on, and that's the important part. perhaps you have a different model compressor?

besides, have you not seen the results? it works perfectly.

same here. i got two types of whining. one is a whine when i step on the gas with the a/c on. the other only occurs whenever it rains and i get the sound, probably the belt? i don't know, i have had this problem for awhile now. i'm just too lazy to get it fix.

I think my car has this problem. Only thing that is different is the noise is worse with the A/C and almost non- existent when ac is off which is the opposite of what you guys are saying... Could I have the same problem?

I spoke to nissan today and I was told that because my car is almost 10 years old there is no recalls available
