My friend has a 1998 max SE automatic. The car was
under warrenty so he beat up on the tranny by neutral
dropping it (N into Drive)and blew the seals. The dealer
ordered a SE tranny which we have the lower model SE. The
dealer said if you read the spec badge on the passanger
side of the engine bay it will tell you the # of the tranny. He also said the SE tranny is a little bit beefed
up than the GLE, GXE, and the lower model SE.(it suppose to have a slip differencial or something). Anyone out there with a top of the line SE, holla Back and give the
Tranny number. Now when my friend peals out if the drive
wheel slips tha other wheel catches. Is the dealer lieing or is this the truth. Should I swop the regular tranny
for an SE tranny, or forget and go Level 10 when I get some money.

God Bless

Never heard of this. To my understanding, the only performance difference for the se is suspension and tire related. Dealer is probably full of doodoo. Also never heard of good se vs. cheap se trans. I could be wrong though. From what i gather, the valve body mod is the best way to go. Supposedly makes the car grab the gears quicker and more solid for better track times and longer life. Seemed a little pricy though $450? and you have to send yours away so you get down time.

why?

I have a question, why is it that in all the other countries, all the manufacturers have all these neat stuff on their base cars--and yet we would need to pay extra for this stuff...
I find it a bit annoying sometimes--if not forced to spend more money if I would want soemthing that someone else would pay less for in other countries.

Re: why?

economics: supply & demand. high rev engines are not exactly a new concept. made from 1930s, in other countries. but "americans in general" prefer torque over hp. :/

More dealer BS.

For the same year Maximas, the automatic transmissions are all the same. Same goes for manual transmissions too.

The foreign (i.e. Canadian) 4th gen Maxima SE's with 5-spds have limited slip differentials. I think all 3rd gen SE 5-spds had limited slip too. The 2001 anniversary edition maxima has limited slip on the 5-spd too.

honestly

i really don't know what he(don in texas) does to the vb, and i don't know how to get ahold of him, but i'm sure someone can help you find him if you want it done. It makes the car shift much quicker and more firm. Like i said before you have to send him your vb, makes no diff where you live. I think he had a think one time where you send him the money for the vb and then some "insurance"money and he would send you a modded vb. when you got the new one in you sent him your vb and got your insurance back. Or, this might have been something else entirely.

LS Tranny has a model # that ends with a "V"
Regular Tranny model # ends with an "A"

Look on the silver plate on the Passenger side of the firewall.
