Re: Re: Re: incredible price

Yo dude,

I'm in Long Island and take my car to the Walmart in Centereach. My little bro takes his to the one in Babylon with the same deal. I don't think it's anything specific to the store I think they all do it ya just got to ask. Too many people simply accept what is offered (and are too stupid to care) so they don't advertise it or push it on most folks. It's 30 bucks (on the dot) plus tax for 5 quarts of Mobile 1 5w30 and a Fram ph7317 filter

[I]Funny you said that about the dealers. The dealer around here--Nissan Dealer-- uses the OEM filter and also 5 quarts of Castrol motor oil and they charge 20 plus tax with is about 22 for an oil change. The problem with that is you really don't get a chance to tell them what you want. So, I take it to my mechanic and I pay him $10 plus $3 tip to the guy who actually does the work on the car. I bring my own filter ($5) plus the amount I pay for the synthetic oil which is about $22...so the total cost of the synthetic change would probably run me $40. The cool thing is they let me stand there and watch...so that is cool with me.

Do you know if they do that for all the Walmarts or just selected ones? I can go to this one in Jersey and find out.

Which oil is recommended?

Hi everyone,
I aske Amsoil which oil to use here, in Australia (hot in summer about +40C degree, not cold in winter - above 0C degree). An answer was - "Use AMSOIL 0W30, 5W30 or 10W30 oil (your choice). Which one would you recommend? What is a difference in weather conditions?

Thanks

Take your pick really, Amsoil has such

superior film strength, you could run anything you want. But I would use 10w30 just becuase it has the least viscosity differential.

walmart

True, the price for the above mentioned oilchange is good. There are two problems though. First, the fram filter. This is widely regarded as the filter to avoid. Second, and no offence intended, but the people working there are not exactly the seasoned veterans at the nissan dealership. They are usu in a big hurry due to the business at the store, and have not really been trained. On two seperate occasions walmart forgot to put my moms oil cap back on, and about a month ago a dude pulled up at the gas pump next to me with oil pouring from his engine. There was no drain plug, he had just gotten his oil changed at walmart. What happens is that when someone calls in sick they just let anyone change your oil! Best to change your own. Done right every time, and costs less.

Re: walmart

I couldn't agree with you more as far as doing it yourself ...you are the only one who really cares about your car period. As for the ineptness of Walmart I generally agree with you but I feel that way about most auto shops. I have yet to find a truly professional auto shop anywhere on Long Island or for that matter anywhere I can bring my car in on a Saturday where I can get a simple oil change in 1 hour and not leave the car for the day. I would do it myself but getting to the filter is such a pain in the butt in my opinion. As for potential problems I always inspect the car before I drive off .. verify oil level, the filter was changed, etc. I've had good experience at that particular Walmart that's why I keep going.

competence is hard to find

I agree with all that you guys are saying--most of all, there is no one who will pamper and love the car like yourself. Usually the Nissan Dealerships are a bit more careful because you are a "customer" and there are procedures. However, a drawback is that I don't know of any Nissan dealer here who will do a synthetic oil change in the NYC area. The price from walmart is a good price--and certainly after anything is done --one should take a look. Even at my local mechanic, I would usually pop the hood again and make sure the oil cap is tighten and see there is no drips coming from down under the car.
But above all else, a good synthetic oil change will last 7500 according to Shing...so that is about two oil change a year if you average 15K a year. And for the time spent, sure, buy a OEM Nissan filter, take it to a loal guy and watch him do it for the peace of mind--that is what I do.

but $30 for a synthetic is not bad at all...i wonder if they would let you bring your own filter!!

Re: yes

Thanks!

I was curious if they were using Mobil1 or something else. This is the first dealer I have heard offering a synthetic option so it is good to know their "endorsement" of synthetics.

not a bad price also

unfortunately, I am in NYC, so I guess in order for me to get the synthetic oil change, I have to use my old method of bring your own filter and synthetic oil and let the guy there change it. It comes out to about the same price. I just personally have a perference for the mobil 1 snythetic oil over quaker state. In the end, oil is oil--

actually there is a fairly long post in the main board about mobil 1 oil vs. amsoil oil...check it out.
