Fault code parade

I know i'm probably gonna get flamed for this question, but I tried searching and couldn't find what I was looking for, I also looked through the FAQ's and couldn't find a match to my problem

I was driving up to my sisters place in Seattle and about 5 miles from her house I noticed I had developed a slight miss. When I got there I pulled into her garage hoping to be able to figure out the problem. I popped the hood and the engine died.

After about 20 minutes of scratching my head, I finnaly bit the bullet and had it towed home. After arriving, and having a beer, I ran codes this is what came up:

1. Random/multiple cylinder misfire
2. Crankshaft position sensor A circuit malfunction
3. Idle control system malfunction
4. Distributor signal interrupt

I know that any one of these could cause the problem that i'm having, but I also know that the chances of all these going bad at the same time is pretty slim.

Anyway, it cranks fast but wont start. I had this happen once before but when I went out the next day it started up with a little bit of convincing from the angry pedal. It's a 1999 Maxima SE.

Thank you in advance for the help i'm sure i'll get and be gentle, I know that just because I couldn't find it doesn't mean that the answer isn't out there.

It's a 99, change the coils. And please tell us the engine codes it's giving, be more specific but more than likely from what i've seen in the forums, change the coil packs.

All of them??? One was replaced when I bought it. Why would all of them go bad at once?

Codes retrieved were: P0300, P0335, P0505, P1320

Thanks, Kevin

So, I think i'm just gonna test the crank sensor. Does anyone know exactly how I should go about the test? Should I check for resistance, if so how much should I have and which pins should I be checking from, or would I be looking for a voltage change?

Thanks, Kevin

p code followed by the codes we list.

p0335 = 0802 = Crank Pos Sensor.
p0300 = 0701 = Cam or crank from what i could understand of the thread
p0505 = 0205 = Idle speed control = clean the IACV and the two harnesses plugged into it -- fixed it for more than a few people
p1320 = 0201 = Diagnostic Trouble Code 0201 indicates a problem with the ignition coil and power transistor.

Seems to be harnesses disconnected, go across unplug and clean any harness you see with electrical contact cleaner. let it sit for a while then try starting it again.

No luck on the crank pos sensor, the one on the flywheel measured 5.03 volts, and the one on the front below the crank pully measured 530 ohms. I guess i'll try the cam pos sensor next.

I see on another thread that some people have ruined their iacv when they tried to clean it, I think i'll wait to try that till i've checked everything else first.

I'm looking at my camshaft pos sensor and am reading 1500 ohms resistance. My question is whether it is a Hitachi or a Mitsubishi sensor, the only name on it is Nissan. The part numbers are 23731 and 38u01, and rs-306 and 8610.

Thanks for the help.

Well, the camshaft pos sensor is within spec. Reading 1500 ohms range for Hitachi is 1470-1700. Looks like i'll just take it to a shop. I'll keep you updated when I figure it out.

Thanks for the help I got.

Check/clean the grounds that bolt to the lower intake manifold first, that's actually the first step in the fsm for the cps pos sensor.

Turns out it was the rear CPS. Thought I checked everything but, I didn't even know it had 2 CPS's. Oh well.

Well, just 3 days after getting my car back from the shop I just had another coilpack malfuction. I think this is going to be my last Nissan I ever buy. My 94 lasted me 9 years and 230K miles without leaving me stranded and this POS has cost me 2500 in little parts over the past 10 months. I don't know what the hell Nissan was thinking when they made these cars but i'm done.

Later, Kevin

Sad. Well these cars are about 10 years old, it's about when lots of little things stop working. Using the forums, repair manuals, and org members to help you fix things yourself can cut your costs considerably. I'm no expert, but in the past 3 years owning my 97 I've only taken it to a [private] shop to get my 5th gen clutch installed. I've been able to fix everything else, including most of the classic wear out issues (CPS, coil packs, knock sensor, EGRC solenoid, starter, etc).
