Upgrading Headers Help

I've looked for good write ups on how to remove these things and nothing has really been able to help me. ive gotten the front exhaust manifold off but im stuck at the heat shield on the back theres just not enough room. pulling my engine out would be a deffinite last resort so does anyone have any tips or explainations on how they got their out? im trying to upgrade to a pair of aftermarket headers and for this and a y pipe my local auto repair shop wants 600... thats nothing i have to just throw around. any ideas would be much appreciated

easiest way to get to the rear heat shield would be to remove the intake manifold then everything is right there alot easier then having to remove the cross member

the cross member is not a big deal to take out and it makes everything alot easier to get to the heat shields make everything easier to get to as well . you will need a 14mm and maybe 2 u-joint swivel sections to take the headers off the rear the front is a breeze. the hardest thing for me was the y-pipe becauce of the factory heat shields so whatever you do just have patience by the way all the heat shield bolts are 8mm and the y pipe support bracket are 2 12mm bolts

4th gen threads:

Not too helpful, but encouraging.

The 5th gen install is VERY similar to the 4th gen, minus the EGR system. So, with that said, these should help you in some way/shape or form.

Valid question as well. Depending if the new headers are replacing the y-pipe as well, the difficulty goes up a little.

It took me like an hour to swap mine I don't remember there being any heat shields being in the way of anything, either, just 3 bolts at each manifold and the 2 at the cat, very simple.

u posted the same thing twice and tried to reword it first of all second of all if you did your research you would see that a cali spec maxima benefits from headers because of the huge precats in the headers that get removed once you replace them with headers

Headers alone won't give you much improvement, and you may lose low end torque. With a free flowing 304 stainless exhaust, equal length 304 stainless headers, y-pipe, a remapped ecu and lightened flywheel you will see quite an improvement in low mid range to higher rpm not to mention building revs faster (maybe even MEVI). With the Maxima's broad torque curve and gearing, you can afford to bias towards building more horsepower. There is so much you can do with these engines. NA, Turbo, SC... it's up to you, your imagination, and ability to decipher the crap from the useful and educated info.

Seriously stop with the "would this or that look good?" posts, and ask a friend or make a decision based on what you like. I've been a member for a week or two and I'm tired of it.

Cattman headers give 20whp over stock. Take that for what it worth.

I've had some fun with pulling out the stock manifolds and building a custom OBX header installation. There's stuff in here that might be useful..

how hard is it to take off the intake manifold? and the headers i bought were pretty much a generic brand from hong kong on ebay. thanks for all the help so far i was just having trouble finding answers to my actual problem of space for the rear manifold removal. i found an o2 simulator on ebay... its a small attachment that i guess makes the sensor farther from the pipe so it tricks the ecu. is this a good idea or no... ther all about $10 on ebay
