my gf's uncle has a 98 with a spoiler that is rusted to $hit. well not the spoiler, but the support rather.

i can see into his trunkfrom the outside.

im not sure how severe ur rust spots are, but replacing the whole trunk lid may be an option for u. look around scrap yards if FS section on this site.

i wanted a spoiler at first, but i guess i am lucky my car doesnt have it. it doesnt do jack $hit for u anyways, just extra weight. to get any significant downforce u need a real tuned wing..oh yeah and u need to go a lot faster than regular driving speed for it to have any affect.

Options:

1. Replace trunk lid
2. Remove spoiler, sand, primer, paint, clear.

Getting a whole new lid is probably much more affordable, especially if you can find one in your color in your area. Hope this helps.

if u replace the trunk lid the key will not match the lock and u dont wanna carry two different keys around ( i wouldnt ) so that is something u should also think about - the trunk lock.

You can swap out the trunk lock, its not hard. But 99BlackMaxMs was right, those are your options.

Whatever your going to do, do it. This will only get worse. the face of my trunk was stained with rust, and eventually the wing went thru the trunk because of the rust holes. So, cut out the rust areas, use sheet metal and replace the area, bondo, sand, prime, paint, seal.

Ok replacing the trunk lid seems like it would be more expensive than removing the spoiler sanding the rust, priming, painting, and sealing. But if not I guess I should just find a trunk lid the same color but what if I cant? I would like to know how to fix the problem my self or how to remove and put a new trunk lid in, I still have not gotten a detailed descriptions of either solutions I know I am asking alot of some one to just take a few minutes out of their day to describe how to do this but I have seen people do this for others before and I thought this was what this web site was for. I need to get this done as soon as possable because its killing me and the rust keeps getting worse.

oh wow, that looks disgusting. I guess your best bet is to sand and all, then go to sherwin williams automotives and get your Car color paint. Tell them year model etc and they will find paint color.

Just get rid of the rust! LOL

well its not growing like a mushroom in one day so u still have time. as long as water is not entering the trunk u r fine. if it is then seal the holes with silicone while u r figuring out the next move.

just get a new trunk lid, switch the locks as phenryiv1 is saying, and get a body shop to paint it. To me the pictures u provided seem like its beyond saving, the metal has begone to degrade and if u sand u will create a hole. i know u can weld sheet metal and sand but then u need to repaint it anyways. so why not just save the trouble, get a new lid, and paint that if u cant find a matching colour ?

OK I will sand it down for now to see if there are holes in the metal and if there are then I guess I will start looking around for trunklids. I just dont want to get a turnk lid that was not taken car of as well as mine besides the rust it has no scratches and its debadged, the trunklid has always been my favorite part of my car. could I take my trunk lid off my self and put a new one on or am I going to have to have a professional do that?
