Jiggling my shifter

in my 97 maxima which is an automatic, i now have to jiggle the shifter, only coming off of P, up and down to get it to switch gears.

Every other gear shifts to another easily, but from PARK trying to move down, i have to push up and then down once or twice before i can get it to reverse or any other position.

Any suggestions i do to the shifter to make it smooth?

sounds like it's the parking / lock assembely for when you press on the brake to release the lock. could be that a bushing is worn out or the linkage came apart somehow. have you lifted the trim to see if anything is loose? I would guess it's the linkage or bushings ... but I drive a 5spd, so ... I really dunno.

Cheers

i lifted the trim, everything seems fine. I think it has something to do with the brakes. When i first step on the brake to switch gear positions, and jiggle the shifter, the brakes then allow me to press down on it more. Then i can switch gears.
