Last time I checked, full axles were $120 for driver's and $150 for passenger's, plus shipping from the east coast.

it's easier to just put in a new outer CV joint than just change those plastic boots since there is a chance that dirt and grime got into the exposed components and/or you screw up your joint trying to take it apart to get the new boots fitted on there.

I havent messed much with axles. I didnt know you could just put in a new CV joint and not have to replace the whole axle. If thats true, then why replace the whole axle at all?

sorry, misquote. I meant CV axle, but yeah you could replace just the joint provided you can put the bearings and stuff back together when you take them apart, not really worth the hassle IMO

Im not even sure my axles are bad. I know the CV boots are torn and dry. I could just take off the axles, put new boots on them and clean stuff up. But if the axles are messed up, I should just get new axles.

BTW sorry for the thread jack. cant really start my own and havent found any posts related to this.

I am currently looking them up on the boards. The free search feature sucks majorly. I might just google the internet instead. Thanks for the info tho. $300 to replace both axles is much cheaper than the local shop that quoted me $1200.

Don't mean to run the issue in the ground, but my experiences with Marty @ Raxles has been absolutely helpful, courteous and really caring/answering questions (even some that would get flamed on this forum. His product is excellent and he is totally professional and a real pleasure to work with. Many of us have (I have!) experienced REALLY good service from Raxles/Marty, I would recommend any .org'r with CV/axles questions/problems contact him!

Did you guys use the FSM or the Haynes manual to do the axle replacement? which one is more straight forward

I reviewed the haynes manual procedure and have yet to look it up in the FSM.

Is their CV axle universal (i.e. works on both ABS and non ABS vehicles?)

FSM is better on just about everything. Considering you have a '95, and if the axles are virgin good luck getting the passanger side to seperate from the halfshaft bearing, I've found it's usually easier to just remove the 3 14mm bolts from the block and pull the entire bracket instead, it's much easier to seperate after the fact.

I'll keep that in mind, if I remember correctly that's what the Haynes manual says to do. I've never done this before but it needs to be done, the weathers nice and I believe I can do it myself (plus I can't afford to shell out $1000 at the shop). So wish me luck guys. Any advice is greatly welcomed/appreciated, feel free to chime in.

$1200 to replace both Axles? Are you kidding me? I paid $250 to replace both at my local mechanic. You would be better off going to Pep Boys or Strauss. I think I was quoted from $400 to $700 for the job.

Good luck.

You sure they didn't just replace the boots? I was quoted 800 for both Axles.

That price is asinine. They must be using OEM axles. You can get parts store axles (like I have always done) for $50 per side...

most people on this board like to say their parts store axle experiences have been horrid, mine have been just fine and I've used them on 3 different maximas, two of them raced heavily and often without issue (knock on wood). I'm going to stick with the cheaper parts store axles until I have reason to switch to more expensive (though still much cheaper than OEM) raxles.

The labor is a few hours for a first timer guy with hand tools. A shop should be able to do it in under two hours.

The whole Axle assembly was replaced. I was there when he did it. $800 bucks is a lot of money for an axle job man. If I was you, I would get those Raxels which people here seem to crave about and install them yourself.

Yeah I know from experience myself. When I crashed my 1st 3rd gen, I was forced to drive my mother's Ford Escort. The car altenator died on my way to school and I replaced it and one of those places. I think the charges were close to $400 bucks with labor. I had to, since I was not that close to my house and the towing fee to have it replaced at my mechanic would equal about the same amount.

Burned to the ground? Did you just replace yours at that place? Please say NO.........

Marty is the man, he is the only person i would talk to if my car needs axles again (which it wont because his are already on it) trust me on this one, dont buy autozone or pep boys ones, spend the few extra dollars and get ones that will last. and just replace the whole deal, not only the boots. its worth it

What is the average time it should take to replace them both, i've heard from different sources say 90 mins (with pnematic tools) 1/2 day without pneumatic tools. Any insights?
