it increases air flow big time. they replace the restrictive stock pipes with larger and more free-flowing pipes. the y-pipe increases power by +-15hp while the b-pipe is debatable. im sure with the y-pipe, the b-pipe will increase hp too. anyone correct me if im wrong. i want a y-pipe soo bad! im waiting for WSP to debut there nonmandrel bent y-pipes...

He is right. But just soley adding the Y-Pipe w/ everything else stock will do little. When the Y-Pipe is combined with such things as a custom exaust, cat converter, ect. thats when you get the most out of the Y-Pipe.

Say you get a Supercharger. Adding any of these after-market bolt-ons will work the BEST w/ a supercharger. But SC's are way outta my league price wise, and same with alot of others.

Just put my Y-pipe on today and Yes it does increase performance. I installed it with the RT cat and in one word "Wow"! It pulls sooooo much harder after about 3200 rpm that it will actually push you into the seat. I also have the PR CAI which helps a lot also. I say go with the PR CAI first - very noticable and makes your car sound like it has a small block V-8 in it. If you are going to do a full exhaust go with the Y-pipe and RT cat later on when you do the rest. I will have my custom dual exhaust on by the end of next week. I'm going to test the 1/4 this friday and see what all this stuff does and then again next friday and see what having the custom cat-back system will add. I dont think the B-pipe does much except make it louder. Maybe 2-5 hp gain. For your first 2 mods I suggest the Stillen adjustable RSB and the PR CAI. Good luck and let us know how the car is comming.

So if add the Bpipe and y pipe, high tech cataylic with stillen exhaust will i still be able to pass emissions?

For your first 2 mods I suggest the Stillen adjustable RSB and the PR CAI. Please bear with me what does this actually do and where can i get it?

Here are some informative links:
http://web2.airmail.net/scutchen/max_faq/
and
www.maximadriver.com

You can get the Rear Sway Bar (Stillen or Addco) from lots of different places. www.custommaxima.com is having a group deal on the addco. If you want the stillen (more $$) try www.eatricezone.com

For the CAI custommaxima is also having a group deal, or try www.cattmanperformance.com he sells a CAI also.

Yes the Stillen one is more $$$, BUT it is also the ONLY adjustable one. I highly recommend it. The RSB will really firm up the rear of the car when cornering - I felt it more than I did the Stillen FSTB. The CAI will definatley be a noticable power gain. A friend of mine dyno tested his '97 before and after putting it on and he gained 7 hp, I dont know about the touque gain but it feels like about 15-20. Go to www.eatricezone.com and tell Phuong that you are from maxima.org and he will hook you up. For the CAI - check the group deal forum, I got mine from www.cattman.com for a good price though.

The Y-Pipe gives more power by helping the engine breathe easier. It eliminates the (2) pre-cats that are mounted right after the front and rear exhaust manifolds. These pre-cats are there to reduce cold-start emissions. By being closer to the engine, the cats are closer to the engine and can therefore reach operating temperature sooner and start cleaning up the emissions sooner. By eliminating the pre-cats and cleaning up some of the nasty bends in the stock y-pipe, exhaust flow is better. Technically, replacing the factory y-pipe to ones without cats is illegal by federal law (tampering with emissions system). However, once the car warms up, it should be able to pass smog as the catalytic converter must reach it's light off or operating temperature before it can effectively clean up emissions.

The B-pipe is the section that connects the catalytic converter to the muffler/tail section. An intermediate pipe. The stock Nissan B-Pipe has a resonator to help keep the car silent/quiet. There is a crimp/bend in the b-pipe to help it clear some pieces under the car. The aftermarket B-Pipes help gain power by smoothing out the bends and eliminating the crimp in the stock B-pipe. The B-pipe should be totally emissions legal as it is after the catalytic converter.

Doing the mods closest to the engine effect power the most. I.e. a Y-pipe is very close to the engine, the b-pipe farther back, and the muffler, even further back.

Thanks!
Do you mean pre-cats. Well i ordered the ypipe and stillen exhaust so i will be able to pass emission as long as i reach its operating temp? And having aftermarket y pipe is not illegal, right! Thanks again.

Excellent, now you're ready for the y-pipe if you want to increase your performance, however, i would highly recommend a RSB(GD going on for $115US) and FSTB ($40US) first because handling in stock Maximas are pretty bad... If you decide on the y-pipe though, go with Budget, cheapest and decent quality, plus, since you already have an intake, you will get pretty good gains... B-pipes and mufflers do very little at this point, (unless you have some sort of forced induction ie. turbo, nitrous, S/C) and won't do much except change the sound and look of your car...

You dug up a thread from a year (and 2 days) ago , that must mean your using the search function

Definatly Y-pipe first, 15-20 HP gain with your intake. $225 for a mandrel bent Y from Warpspeed, or slightly cheaper for the non mandrel bent.

If you want to do more exhaust work I would probably do a B-pipe next. A warpspeed B-pipe will remove that restrictive S bend behind the cat and the crushed area behind the resonator. If you buy your Y-pipe from warpspeed (does not have to be at the same time) they will also give you a $25 discount on a B-pipe. You can choose with or without a resonator. Gains will probably only be about 5 HP. The B-pipe fix (http://warpspeedperformance.com/bpipefix.htm - I'm to lazy to code a link so sue me) will remove the two restrictions for less money but if I would spend a little more for the full B-pipe.

A high flow cat will not give much for gains but is nice if you want to finish off your exhaust and make it 2 1/2" all the way back.

I would definatly add a Front strut tower brace (FSTB) and rear sway bar (RSB) before I added a b-pipe or high flow cat though. Together they will cost under $200 and make a noticable improvement in handling.

366 days after this thread went inactive it is brought back to life, I give you props mate, but there really isnt a magic set-up. Just do a Y that you can afford and a b that you can afford. They all sound mostly alike, with subtle differences. If you do a 2k or 2k1 I have been told that their stock muffler flows better.
