Engine Removal Advice Needed

Hey guys, I just need some input on how to get my frontend up in the air about 36". I have the rear end up on jacks and the rear tires are sitting on top of the front wheels/tires to keep the jacks from tipping. The motor is dropped and sitting on three jacks, 2 to support the center member and my tranny jack in the middle- I did it like the FSM stated. I thought that with my jack I'd be able to lift it high enough with some 4*4's as spacers, my jack only lifts to 18 and 1/2 inches.

I need to know how some of you guys have raised the front and what lift points you guys used, I know Tavarish used an engine hoist and took it out from the top but I don't have space to store an engine hoist and preffered lowering the motor like the fsm shows, anyways storing a couple of jacks in my condo isn't as bad. I'd like to thank you guys in advance for any input- I used free search and checked stickies to no avail- Thanks again.

p.s.- I get out of work around 11:30pm so I'll respond then.

Thanks SLINKY, the problem is I don't want to buy an engine hoist (too big to store), I'll call a couple of buddies to see if ant of them have one I can borrow, any other ideas though? thinking about it the picker will probably be safer than just relying on jackstand. Any other thoughts incase I can get a picker? Thanks again.

yea tool rental places usually rent them out for 25bucks a day with a 100 deposit. i had the max on jack stands and wood blocks under the control arm brackets. not safe but you gotta do what you gotta do. autozone or pepboys was selling the pickers for 119.00 though.

I use a chain routed under the lower intake with the help of a coat hanger to pick the entire car up using the cherry picker, then max out the jackstands on the subframe where the front welds are, then use a combination of cinderblocks and two small sections of 4X4 that have an angle cut on them as back up, you must have back up, the more the better. Then unbolt the mounts and drop it with the cherry picker, just make sure you have enough chain so that the cherry picker is hitting the underside of the hood, otherwise the arm will hit the upper core-support before the engine reaches the ground. Dropping it from the bottom is much much easier than getting underneath, pulling the tranny etc then taking the motor out from the top.

THANKS a whole lot for the suggestions guys, I'll check out the rental options on the hoist. Using the cherry picker to raise the front would've never come to mind if you guys wouldn't have suggested it, again....thanks

I have pulled one from the top with an engine hoist, and I have also dropped an engine and pulled it from under the car. But both times I had an engine hoist. in order to get it out from the bottom the car needs to be really high. When we have done this in the past the rear has been on jack stands and then the front of the car was jacked up as high as possible with a jack and two or three 2x4's stacked on top of one another. We lowered the engine on to a section of carpet then pulled it out. Good luck. I am not sure you can get the car high enough with a traditional jack in order to pull an engine out while still on a jack.
