Transmission Problems, Help

So I am really lost when it comes to transmission components going wrong on my maxima. Earlier today I was driving, put the pedal to the floor and shifted into second. It jerked and burned out. Then I realized I couldnt put it in gear while the car was running. I immediately assumed my clutch was blown; however, that does not make sense because I had an exedy stage 2 put in it a little over a year ago. So I turned the car off, put it in first, turned the car on, gave it some gas and was able to drive it home in first. What does this sound like to yall? Im lost and I am going to pull the transmission tomorrow. Please help me out
Thanks
Zack

Could be the synchros could be the throwout bearing could be the clutch spring etc. Any more details?

Its hard to put it in 5th and reverse when the car is off, no noises under the hood when the car is running and the clutch is engaged or disengaged. Other than that, no. Also, what is the difference in these?

If you can shift the car in all the gears with the engine off, then the tranny is probably fine.

I'm betting you fragged your clutch. Did it smell funny like a burned clutch?

You can also very carefully remove the gear position sensor on the drivers side of the tranny to drain the oil. Be careful because this sensor are stupid brittle from the hot oil. Have a big deep oil catch pan since it will come out quick. You're looking for broken bits of aluminum or plastic or something that might be blocking the shift components inside the tranny.

If the oil is clean then I think you need to drop the tranny and check out the clutch.

I had a simular problem with my old 200sx se-r .....You could shift it when it wasnt running, but when the car was running the clutch would allow you to shift only at a specific point in the travel....ended up being some sort of shift lever on the transmission that had broken....not clutch or tranny itself....hope that helps
