Transmission/idle problem
Usually the problem of low/hard idle comes from the build up of crap throughout the intake. The cars are 10 yrs old. so it would be your best idea to try and to clean anything and everything starting from your air filter all the way to the intake manifolds. Use maf cleaner on maf... and air intake cleaner on intake. The Idle Air Control Valve on mine was filthy as well as the upper intake. I recommend taking the pieces apart. If you spray and spray and spray... you most likely will mess up something.
There is a difference between idling low as opposed to missing. You should check and see if a code comes up first. Most likely it is a sensor. The cleaning of the other stuff wouldn't hurt though.

I had some off and on again problems with stalling at red lights and the car would act funny when I jumped on the highway with out warming up. It turned out that the coolant thermometer was stuck open so my engine was always cold.
It also explained way I was always freezing my *** off last winter.

Transmission problem
I also have a transmission problem but am unable to create my own thread, so I hope nobody minds me posting it here. I have a 96' Maxima SE with about 186k on it. The engine is in excellent condition, havent had any major problems with it till now, I replaced the clutch at 180k. The transmission seems to be making a slight grinding noise when in neutral with the clutch out, but as soon as i engage the clutch it quites up. When I start driving it makes the noise, loader when i accelerate, but when I'm rolling and press the clutch the noise continues. I jacked it up and heard no noise. Set one tire down and let the other spin and heard the noise, and vise versa. I'd have thought throwout bearing but it was replaced with the clutch and thats only 6k mi old. Any ideas?
In my case, i've just discovered that i have a valve cover seal leak. I was taking put my coils packs to ohm-test them, and my 4th cyl. coil was drenched in oil! This sux @ss since, the valve cover gasket was just replaced, and the outside leak stopped, but apprently that made things worse since it's now bleeding internally!!! But that could contribute to bad idle.
