Valve cover Gakset

Well i never found any write ups on it, its not difficult or anything, but its nice to have something to go by just in case you arent 100% sure on what you are doing.

For the front valve cover i did it in these steps

1. Remove ignition coil cover
2. Disconnect and remove coil packs, i numbered mine so id get them in the right order
3. There are 2 little clips holding the ignition coil harness just pop it out with a flat blade screw driver
4. Remove all 10 valve cover bolts. they are 10mm and fairly long.
5. Disconnect the valve cover breather on the right side near the battery, and the hose going to the rear valve cover, it just pulls off, be careful it can be brittle and may crack.
6. Once you have all those off, i too k out the oil cap to give me something to pull on grab were the breath is and pull you may need to use a rubber mallet to knock it loose, dont hit it too hard it is alumium and cracks easy.
7. Now that you have it loose, the black injector harness is in the way, i just loosened the black straps holding it in and took off the valve cover.
8. Now that you have the valve cover off, scrape off the old gakset and clean the mating surface on both the cylinder head and valve cover
9. I used a gasket scraper, and then used a clean rag with some brake cleaner on it to remove any oil and gasket materal left. Be careful on the cylinder head, its aluminum and is easy to take chunks out of. Make sure you dont leave any gakset materal in the head, it might bite you in the A$$ later on.
10. when the valve cover is clean, place a bead of RTV silicone in the inner channel on the valve cover and place the gasket in its place, let the RTV silicone set for abou 30 minutes, depends on the stuff you used. I used the RED permatex stuff which is oil and heat resistant. I didnt replace the spark plug tube gaskets, mine were fine so i found no need, and the parts were n back order in japan or so i was told.
11. Place the valve cover back on, and with a 10mm put them on so they dont fall off maybe 4 turns.
12. Here is the important step, basically what you want to do is start from the middle and work your way out, this way when the gasket is pressed against the head, it gets pushed out so to speak. so start from the middle and work your way out on both sides. Ill post up a pic for easier understanding lol.
13. You want to torque them down in steps, i did mine to 15NM, then on the second step i did them to 30NM. Not very tight, and remember in most cases on smaller bolts 8,10,12 its better to have them a little loose rather then too tight, especially on aluminum.
14. Put everything back on, pretty simple, coil packs, valve cover breather, anything you touched double check.

Now for the rear, it is quite a bit more involved. You must remove the intake plenum, which is a job in itself. I chose not to do it yet, as i am going to be doing the MEVI in a month. my front was leaking pretty bad, leaked right onto the altenator.

I think i got everything, here is the picture for the valve cover bolt sequence. It is important to do them in steps and not to over tighten them. Over tightening them could cause; oil leaks, or worse stripping one of the bolts on the head, or even cracking the valve cover. That could turn an easy valve cover gasket replacement into something more costly.

I am not taking responisbility for anything that goes wrong, i simply posted this up to help others in need. I take lots from the org, now its time to repay.

this was an old picture of my engine bay back in the day with the injunk intake and basicallly stock. the valve cover use to leak into my altenator...of all the places it could leak.. LOL

There was a writeup somewhere that covered the valve cover removal...I don't have the link on this computer. It's probably in my favorites at home.

But I'm pretty sure I got the link from searching this forum so it's in here somewhere! lol

Nicely detailed write-up. This is on my to do list because both of mine are leaking. Now do the rear one and post some pics!
