Using more oil after switch to Mobil 1
#1
I have a '97 SE 5spd with 60,800 miles. I switched to Mobil 1 5W-30 at my last oil change. After 4000 miles I've added an additional 1-1/4 qts of oil. I did do about 1200 mile road trip that included extended 80-90 mph driving. I haven't had to add oil between changes before. Anyone had a similar experiece?

Mobil 1 used to have that affect on cars years ago..it's viscosity range was wider than most oils and engines didn't have closer tolerances like they do now. The oil would simply leak past the seals. My brother almost ruined his engine by switching at that time. When he changed back to conventional oil everything went back to normal. Try that and see if it fixes the problem.

Just try replacing the Mobile 1 with a good conventional oil. Make sure you use 5W30 year round....going to 10W30 will actually decrease performance since that oil is thicker and our motors have very tight tolerances for better gas mileage and need 5W30 to get in all the cracks! Using 10W30 will only slow the engine down.

Well, I decided to stay with Mobil 1 5w-30, just changed the oil. I really want the protection this winter. I'm in Minnesota. Although the car is garaged at night, sits out at work. Can't believe I'm talking winter, we just got summer. 110 deg heat index today.
Hey...does synthetic recycle the same as dino oil? Didn't know if I should mention it to the garage when I dropped off my used oil.

I would assume so, but don't know for sure. I recycle mine at Pep Boys and they never ask. As a matter of fact I recycle auto transmission oil and they never ask. I know all about those Minnesota winters...my parents grew up in Minneapolis and moved south to get away from them. I think they used to walk 10 miles to school with no shoes! It's too bad...would have loved to play ice hockey and ride snowmobiles all winter growing up!
