S/C question

What exactly drives the s/c is it run off of the crank pulley?
just wondering cause i was gonna get a udp and i was told i couldnt use it with the s/c ,,, if its run off of the crank pulley then that would make sense that i shouldnt use the udp cause i would be underdriving the s/c ..i dont have a s/c yet just thinkin ahead here..
