Ok yesterday i bought a compression tester. I just tested it, i know 142 is the low spec, 185 is the high spec, and no more than 15psi difference between cylinders.
Ok so here's what i did
1.Pulled all the coilpack
2.Loosened all plugs 1 turn
3.Took out plug for cylinder i was testing
4.Attached tester
5.Took out fuel pump fuse
6.Cranked engine 5 times for 5 seconds each time
7.Took and recorded readings

the numbers i got where, with #1 being front left and #6 being back right, 1:185, 2:185, 3:195, 4:180, 5:195, 6:195

That's very high for a 95 with 87K and two bottles of NOS through it, what's wrong.

Has anyone else gotten numbers that high from a 'worn in' engine?

I crank it for between 15 and 20 revolutions, thats what it takes for my compression gauge to stop going up. Be sure your engine is warm. Be sure to hold the throttle wide open. I would recomend that you take all the plugs out while doing this test, this will strain the starter less.

# 4 is kinda low, its 15psi under the highest, factory specs are no more than 14psi difference. Perhaps try the test again but do the things I mention above.

The motor I took out my car had ~25k and some nitrous use and tuning time on it. The CR's were 195-205 across the board.

The motor I just put in is ~205-212 across the board.

why tank u. now, anyway. The engine was warm, i burnt myself once or twice. I didn't even have to crank it more than the 5 times. It went there and stayed but, i came up to post about it and left the gauge with compression and it held IT EXACTLY for at least 10 minutes. At least my numbers are high. Mardi, what is the deal with your engine now, are the numbers up.

Yea the timing chain was off by one tooth on the crank sproket. Thats fixed. Compression was fine @64miles. The rear main is leaking, so I gotta pull the tranney again. I also get a code for ignition signal, that needs some trouble shooting. The a/c needs to be re charged too. But its running, and it seems to be running ok.

Thanks for asking and thanks for your help!

I always remove all the spark plugs and block the throttle wide open for a compression test.

Your numbers are remarkably high. Perhaps your gauge is inaccurate. This is not a smarty-pants remark. Gauges can be wrong. If possible repeat the compression test with a borrowed gauge. You would need to test only one cylinder and compare readings.

Grr, this sucks. i'm gonna have to repeat the reading just to make myself happy. i knew halfway through they were wicked high and ran up here to talk to medicsonic and he said it sounds like i was going it right. i'll try again with the plugs out and stuff but if they stay up my car is a super car.

Yes, I told him that he was following proper prodcedure, but the readings were a little too high to be believable. I was expecting numbers in the 160-170s, so a 195 is a little eye catching, especially in a 'loosened' engine. Funny, DBM gave you the same advice I did.

They are available at most automotive parts stores, about 25 dollars.

thanks guys with info on where to get the kit. I just went out to both Autozone and Sears and got the one from Sears for $25...couple dollars cheaper than Autozone. Haven't open the package yet but just notice that the needle isn't resting against the needle stop and more like 1-2 notches above it. Is this normal?

If the needle indicates zero before use, then it is okay.
