Your friend is wrong, you can lower a car on 18s just as easily as a car on 17s. As to what looks better? Bigger is usally better, but bigger is also expensive.

You can drop it on 20"s if you wanted to. I have 19"s and my car is dropped 3.5".

First you ask 17's or 18's, that's not as easy, I'll address that in a second. Then you ask which looks better. That's easy -> 18"s. Then you falsely talk about a car only being able to be lowered with 17"s. That couldn't be further from the truth. remember, the whole concept of increasing rim size is that the circumference measurement of the outside of the tire doesn't change, or changes little. The bigger the rim, the lower the tire profile, or the smaller the sidewall. O.k., back to 17"s or 18"s. You now know 18"s look better and you now know you can lower your car with them so maybe your mind is made up. But let me put in my two cents. I went with this same battle. I ended up with 17"s. Why? You make a small sacrifice for looks but here are all the benefits: They are lighter! Very important when it comes to 1/4 times. In fact, 15"s would be even better. You can still maintain a decent ride, or at least a better ride than with 18"s. They are A LOT cheaper. For some reason the prices climb fairly gradually up to 17" and then 'bam' they sock it to you hard for 18". Dito for tires. There are more choices in 17"s (depending on the brand of course but in general). So that's why. And I don't think you will see a noticable increase in handling with 18"s. And 17"s are still considered large rims, still larger than stock and you will still be larger than 95% of the cars out there. It's a good balance in other words. But, like I said, it's up to you. Good luck.

20 inch rims

Yo shadow, I was thinking about puting 20's on my max. What
is the wides tire size can I go with, without rubbing. I know 20'inch tires run in some wide tire sizes. The smallest i saw was 245 40 20. Do they make them any narrower
or will they rub. May be I should just go with 19 ins. Anyone with 20's
Holla back

RE: 17s or 18s...

ICEMAN:
17"s = more performance oriented (lightweight wheels available in the size).
18"s = more aesthetically oriented (cost much more $$$, look better, heavier because 18" is the line drawn for show).
Don't flame me people who have dubs and superchagers (or alike). I'm just saying most 18"+ wheels weigh more than 17" and you can't deny it. Just trying to help.

If you plan on going to the track just throw your stockers back on....it's all on you some people always don't race light to light so 18's or 19's would be fine...but if u into street racing 24/7 throw on what u must

If I was you I would go w/the 18"'s.....I actually just bought a set of 18x8 Enkei V1's....almost everyone that I have talked to said that they went ahead and got 17" but later on decided that they would rather go with 18's...and if your going for the performance side of things...and your only going to race at the track you can just swap with your stocks before you go to the track...

I was gonna get 18's, but went 17's becuase of performace reasons.

18 = Better looks (In SOME opinions) Performance suffers more

17 = Better perfomance, looks arent as good (In SOME opinions)

I think Generally 17 inchers are considered a GOOD compromise between looks & Performance.

does anyone know roughly what kind of performance 18s (and larger rims) give up to 17s? i mean, i took physics and all of that, i was just wondering if there was a difference you could feel as far as responsiveness and 0-60 times.

i just upgraded from 16's to 18's.. you can feel the difference without a doubt. it was definatley faster with the smaller wheels
