My 95SE w/ 51K on it needs a new knock sensor. I saw a previous post about it and wasn't quite sure what it exactly does. Can I drive it until I get it replaced? Is it an emissions type of sensor. I've already have 5, yes count 'em, 5 02 sensors put in. What gives with this? Getting very discouraged with the car.

Maybe not. Diagnostic Trouble Code 0304 may have been set when you had a bad Oxygen Sensor, as a consequence of that bad sensor. I suggest you reset the Engine Control Module and drive for a week. Then do another DTC readout to see if DTC 0304 has been set. DTC 0304 is an exception to the rule in this respect: it will not turn on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp.

A special kind of microphone

The Knock Sensor is a special kind of microphone. When the KS "hears" engine knock (pinging) it signals the Engine Control Module (the computer). The ECM responds by retarding the ignition timing to eliminate the knocking. This protects the engine from the potentially harmful effects of pinging. However, when the timing is retarded your engine consumes more fuel and delivers less power.

Yes.

No.

Please read the Sticky ECU Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Read the post for DTC 0304. It tells the location of the Knock Sensor and provides instructions for a resistance test.

Daniel,

Are you aware of any other DTCs that won't set the MIL? I think I should update the sticky with this info.

DTC 0304 is the only example I've come across.
