Y-Pipe Question

Hey all, I am new to this forum and would like to know something about Y-pipes. First of all, should i buy anything for the car first before i install the y-pipe to prevent damage. And second, if i do install a y-pipe do i have to cut a round semi circle in my back bumper to match the one on the right side that came stock? Thanks

Hmm, I think you are confused as to what an aftermarket y pipe is intended to do. It is a direct replacement for your cars current y pipe and doesn't require any holes (semi-circular or otherwise) to be cut in your bumper.

Dude, a Y-Pipe is Maxima speak for what everyone else calls a downpipe. It attaches your exhaust manifold to the catalytic convertor. What you are talking about is a custom dual exhaust, which must be custom made for our cars.

Total of 8 bolts, about 1 hour to install, especially if you do the whole exhaust at the same time.

1 hour for someone with mechanical skill and tools and no problems.

If the bolts are rusted on, or you don't have the proper tools, it could easily take much longer. Removing the stock Y-pipe is the hard part. 7 of the 8 bolts aren't too bad, but that one around the precat is a ***** to get off. Once you get the stock off, putting the new one on is easy (as long as it fits right)

Also make sure to put Anti-sieze on the 02 sensors when you replace them, cause if you ever need to take them out again it'll make it much easier.

Wow you need lots of help. You definatly shouldn't install the Y-pipe yourself.

O2 sensor is just what it says. Their are two that screw into the Y-pipe.
Anti-seize is a lubricant that you put along the threads of the O2 sensor to prevent it from getting stuck in the hole from the extreme heat. I don't know the technical understanding of how it works.

So if such a "uneducated" maxima owner wanted to learn more Maxima's, where would he go?

Sorry didn't mean to sound so belittling.

But I usually read (search) before I ask questions, cause chances are that somebody already asked it before.
Check out the links on the main page, try the maxima faq's and www.maximadriver.com
These are two good places to start.
