I don't believe you can do this if you leave the shifter in Drive. You can control the shift points (within reason) by operating the shifter while accelerating. Don't expect too much performance gain by doing this.

i tried that and at wot it runs almost to redline.

well if i shifted at like 5800 rpm, for example , into 4th i would be in more of the power range of my torque curve and would be able to accel faster. THIS is what I think. i might be wrong thats why i ask. so if i am misunderstanding this do not take it as me being a smaet a$$.

sorry sometimes i can some off that way i am not trying to be a butt head. thanks i know you seem to know what your talking about and any info i would gladly listen to. bags

Suck up
...Just kidding. I would assume there is a way. When I had my 20's on, I noticed a DRAMATIC shifting difference in my gears. It stayed in pretty much every gear longer. I'm not sure how else you would go about doing this, but good luck!

In my previous post in this thread I assumed your Maxima has an automatic transmission. On rereading your original post, I see you did not specify which transmission you have in your '97 SE. Is it automatic?

The Maxima.Org members who are serious racers could advise you about the best shift points. Those points would depend on which mods you have installed.

I interpreted your original question as "how can I modify the transmission to shift at higher engine speeds when the shifter is in Drive?" Shift points logic is embedded in the Transmission Control Module. AFAIK nobody outside the Nissan Motors Corporation knows how to modify this. The popular Valve Body modification (MobileTek, Level 10, TransGo) offers crisper shifts but do not change the shift points. Plain Jane (my '99 GXE) is a 5-speed so I have limited experience with automatics. Perhaps someone who races with an automatic can jump into this thread with first-hand experience.

Sport Compact Car this month provides an EXCELLENT article on picking the proper shift points. I would advise picking it up and reading it. However, as the author notied, MOST cars get their best performance by shifting at redline.

Re: Re: uhh

yes i do have an automatic, i was saying if your are in 1 for example and move the shifter into 2 at 20mph at WOT, sorry i do not know the rpm at this point but it is lower than 4k, the tranny will saty in 1 until about 6250 rpm. and the same thing happens in every gear. so unless you are not at WOT moving the shifter before 6k rpm does nothing.

when i made reference to the 5800 shift point i was trying to say if i could get my automatic to shift into 4th at 5800 at WOT instead of 6250 i think i would be in a better part of the torque curve. i do not know where the shift point would be best. but i do know shifting before 6200 or so rpms would put my in a better torque rpm on the rpms. i know from looking at my dyno sheets.

yeah i know about the vb mod, and it does exactly what you said. well thank you for the info. yeah plain jane 5-speed may be plain, but you can shift at almost any rpm you want. so there are benifits there.

thanks medicsonic

thanks for the link to cattman, i have a 97, that is for a 96. unless your telling me it works? i do not know. the only reason i have not looked at this or an ECU upgrade is that they are for 96 and below. and SCC had good articles, sometimes i need a dictionary to read them but i will pick it up since the coffe table has a little glass showing. thanks

THis is what i do (Usually for dragging) to help change my shift points. THis only changes them about 100-250rpm difference. When i drag with my 15" rims, my car never hits redline, rahter it shifts aat about 6100rpms. When i ran my 16's it would go right to redline. Since the tire size are different, this changes your gearing slightly. Just my opinion.
