i'm getting the 5 spoke rims from a 97-98 maxima, I know the wideth is 6.5" on the rim and I know that putting a 225/55/16 tires is fine, and a lot of people have done that, but I'm going to use the tires for racing ==> want more rubber, so I'm curious if its saine to put 235/60/16 or 235/55/16 on the rims?

My conscience can't let this post go without re-iterating how un-safe, careless, and stupid this would be.

For the sake of your life (and my sanity) PLEASE don't do this.

You will not find an installer or wheel manufacturer that will allow a 235 width tire without you signing A LOT of disclaimer forms.

 

ok, that's what I wanted to hear now, don't get me wrong, I'm not stupid and will not do stupid ****, but I'm just curious, since I have looked up on tirerack and they do have tires that will actually fit, 235/50/16 on the 6.5" width tire. also, the miata tire calculator said that that's a good match

I was just concerned in terms of the safety, so if you think it's unsafe, then, it might be, but I am curious if there are people actually running this

that's too damn wide... besides, a 60 series will throw off your speedo, increasing the overall turning diameter.
Go for 225/50/16s... racing or not, when I had my 3rd gen, which handles way better then 4th gens w/ independent rear suspension + Limited Slip Diff.. I could never get my 225/50/16 tires to squeal, NEVER, I would take turns at crazy speeds which would probably cause the car to flip over it I went any faster and they didn't squeal. Don't underestimate 225/50/16, it's enough tire.. just get good ones and you'll be good....

 

I rode on 225/50/16 in my 300zx befor my Max and it puts a lot of rubber on the road, just don't get some crappy kelley tires..

You get what you pay for in tires. I try to stick with yokohamas myself.

225/50 = slightly better handling, turn-in response, and slightly harsher ride

225/55 = handling not top priority, but ride comfort is




Based on your own comments 225/50 looks like the way to go.


And thanks for asking our opinions rather than other members who knee-jerk and say 235/245 widths on 6.5"/7" rims is perfectly safe and tire manufactures are dumb, etc.

I went the 225/55/16 route and liked it . I found some nice tires are the Michelin Energy Plus's. Great traction on them.

hey bill, I know you think it's unsafe, but hear me out please, I went to www.tirerack.com as I mensioned before, and I looked up some tires, and Michelin Pilot HX MXM for example had a tire size 235/50WR16 and the rim width range was 6.5-8.5", now I know you don't think that his size fits, but even the website says that it does, can you please explain how you are MORE RIGHT THEN THEY ARE?

Dude did you see my tires? They are 225 and already look beefy, imagine if you put 235 they are gonna stick out like crazy, plus I think you'll get a lot of unwanted side to side movement between the rim and the tire.
