transmission

i just bought i 97 maxima. i really love the car but one thing is bothering me. it's an automatic and @40mph the transimission jumps around a lot. another thing is when on the highway and i let off the gas i feel the transmission jump. i know it's related to the overdrive. is there an adjustment that can be made or anything else that can be done. thanks

Mine behaves the same way. I think it is a "sporty" feature of the transmission.

Correct me if I'm wrong fellow automatics.

Sounds like the lock up torque converter is doing its thing. when you press the lightly does it accelerate but the revs dont come up as quick, like its a 5 speed? Thats what it sounds like to me.

Yeah, theirs nothing 'sporty' about the Max automagic, unless you make it that way...

The day after I bought my car I took it to my mechanic for the same problem. He has a 99 SE and gave me his keys so I could drive his. Well, his did the same thing and when I got back he said "welcome to Maxima ownership".

The Maxima's automatic is not too smooth to begin with. Compare it with an automatic from a Toyota and you will realize Nissan has a long way to go when it comes to refined automagics.

You can go with synthetic ATF and a cooler to prolong transmission life, but it won't make it any smoother.

Now you know why I say my Maxima has an "autotragic" transmission.
