Do 4th Gen Windshields crack easily????

Hey my windshield was hit by a tiny rock on the way to Vegas and a crack started growing. Is this a common problem for 4th gens? A couple of other friends with 4th gens had cracked windshields in the past. On my other cars I had tons of rocks and debris hit the windshield and never a crack.

My real question is....what do I need to consider when I get it replaced? Should I try to get a Nissan factory windshield or just go with a generic replacement? How much should it cost? Thanks. I hope this is a new topic for everyone...the board is getting a little stale.

Maybe.

My windshield has a million nicks in it, but none big enough to start a crack, and I've gotten the 2 that were fixed.

But I live in Seattle, and the previous owner was in Oregon, and people love to use gravel up here for driveways and back roads....lots of glacial rock all over the place, so gravel is cheap.

Compared to other cars that i've owned, both of my 4th Gereration Maxima's have windsheild cracks in them. And they were both caused by small stones that commenly hit your winsheild on the freeway. I allways that of it as bad luck!

I thought like everyone would have that as comprehensive insurance? And if you get like Giant Glass or something they usually use Nissan or whoever else you need anyhow.

I think I just have a bad one

I was sitting in my Maxima parked and my windshield spontaneously cracked. Just a little crack, but it really scared me. I heard a loud "pop" and I thought someone throw something or shot something at me. It took me a while to find the crack, but the weird thing is that it's cracked between the glass. I felt the outside and inside but there's no crack or dent. So now I have a growing harline crack, it's actually quite humbling.

Anyways if I recall from my AP Physics I took in high school, some windshields can have air pockets in them (they aren't supposed to) and when the intensity of the sun hits the glass at such an angle with so much energy, the electrons inside the pocket excite and jump energy states. This refraction will expand the air pocket and pop the glass.

Don't your premiums go up if you use insurance? Also, I think my deductible is $500... I would tend to go it alone.

I am on my third in two years It really makes me mad, the smallest rock hit it and left a nice star pattern on it....I have had seven other vehicles, and not one has ever had a crack, much less a big *** star on it... I don't know what it is with Nissan glass and paint...

Had a pebble break my AC condensor unit ($650)
and a pebble chip my windshield, but it has not spread at all.
The rest of my windshield looks like it was sand blasted.
Gotta love highway driving.

Mine had a small chip in it, and it cracked all the way down, but I was not suprised, the chip was deep enough to do that in any car.

I am replacing mine in two weeks. I, umm, hit my windshield with a golf club, and it cracked...oops! Next time I will not swing clubs in the garage.

This was my original question when I started this thread. Anyone know the answer? Cost of Factory windshield, installation? Difference between factory and aftermarket?

thanks

I had the impression the glass on our cars was tougher than usual. My windshield has no nicks what-so-ever (knock on wood). Also, when someone tried to break into my car, instead of smashing the glass with their ring, they only left a scratch mark and blood splatter (from his knuckles im assuming) on the glass, while the 2 cars parked next to mine had their windows smashed in completely.
I guess im just lucky...

I just had my original windshield replaced a couple of weeks ago. A nice sized rock(probably the size of a dime) hit my windshield. I jumped. Got a good sized star pattern. Got it replaced for free(MA insurance). Now, two weeks later another good size rock hit my generic windshield, I jumped again, but this time just a small knick. So maybe the OEM is more fragile.
