Brake problem: groaning

When I hit the brakes and come to a hard stop, I hear creaking, groaning noise coming from the front brakes...

ex. Doing a G-Tech Pro 0-60-0 test, I slammed on the brakes to measure my 60-0 distance, and from like 10mph to stop, the brakes were creeking (not so much squealing or grinding, it sounded more like they would break in half and fall off the car).

What the he11 is that all about?

Thanks for any ideas,
Justin

I get the same problem sometimes, not so much recently but one time when I was braking and turning, it was weird, I couldn't believe it was coming from my car!

Daniel B, please help!

AHA!
I have a similar problem, especially with weight shifts (e.g. turns or stop/go traffic). The noise comes from right above my left rear brake. I am replacing the rotors/pads tonight, but it's like a moan/groan noise, and it comes with weight shift. Is it actually the wheel bearing, or the brakes?!

edit: this noise was occurring BEFORE my suspension issues.

I think I have a similar problem, the groan occurs at the rear of my car as soon as I take off, seems like the groan rotates w/the wheel but only at very low speed once I hit 5-10 mph it goes away or either I can't hear it anymore, it does not occur when I slow down or stop, just on takeoff.

When you heat or cool things very rapidly, due to the composition of different materials(pads, rotors, calipers, etc...) some weird noises are going to occur. How is that G-Tech? It looks pretty cool!

OMG, same with me!!! Anyone know what this is?! I was thinking maybe wheel bearing or maybe the brakes are unhappy: too much/too little fluid/air in the lines? I can't figure it out. I am not smart enough lol!

I had the same problem with my 95 max. When I was changing the pads in the rear I noticed that the right rear caliper wouldn't go in very far. It must have been stuck. I bought a new caliper and slapped it on and the problem almost went away. I only get the groaning when I'm backing up now. I realized that it has something to do with the e brake because when the noise happens, I quickly pull up on the ebrake and let it down and the noise disappears. The ebrake cable may be sticking. Try pulling up on the ebrake when the noise happens and then letting it down. This might give you some clues as where to start investigating your problem!!

How do we fix that? I was wondering...those cables are a PITA when you change the rears...the noise started after I changed the rear pads. What should I do...adjust the ebrake cable? The ebrake handle is going up pretty high now...if I lower it will that make the noise go away (less pull on the cable)?

Hmm, well I guess you're right, but I never *ever* had this problem in my 7-year-old RX7, had discs up front and never once sounded like this. Could this be a symptom of glazed rotors? Maybe the groan is the sound of the pads catching and sliding on the rotor when I stop hard?

I like it alot, my buddies at work and I have been testing their cars too! An awesome way to get out of actual work.

The ebrake should go up 10-11 clicks before you cant pull it up anymore. Dont loosin the ebrake, but check to see if its completely unengaging near the rear brakes. I still have to check mine. I'll keep you posted!!

Great! I bet it's not disengaging. I think I should probably stop using mine when I park too...I've got to say, I am not really pleased with all these weird noises and problems that pop up in these cars. I had a really old, nasty Honda before the Maxima, and the thing made less noise! I am probably just going to take it to the dealer soon and say: get rid of brake groan and rear suspension CLONKING.

I know I know...frickin Nissan. I am disappointed in them. For the money they charge for the Maxima, you think it would be higher quality. I can't knock the engine, but $28k for an engine is a lot to ask.

OKay kids, the noise was either one of 2 things. Either it's a kind of built-in-warning noise (e.g. HEY, GET NEW ROTORS), or the rubber seal on the rear caliper piston was getting warped, because it looked kind of creased until we fixed it. Anyway, if you change out the pads/rotors where the noise is emanating from, and check that rubber seal, then the noise should go away!!

Need some help here. About a 2 weeks ago I had a shop replace my rear brakes and rotors in my '98 Maxima. Now when I back up with my foot on the brake, there is a loud moan from the right rear axel. I took it back after a week and we could not duplicate the sound. However, it does it every morning when I back out of the garage. Very frustrated, as I spent $370 to get this done.
