The size is 6-3/4" front and back.
Look into Eclipse speakers, they are ~$80 a pair.

Without an amp, nothing is going to sound better than stock enough to be worth $150.00

Plus, $150.00 worth of speakers isn't going to be much better quality than stock.

Save your money, and get some Focals on Ebay for $250 and a small amp for $100....50x2 would be enough.

And post this in the audio forum next time, please.

I tend to agree with iansw. The stock maxima system isn't bad (and you have no idea how much cringing it takes to make me say that). The stock mid-bass comes to be very low, so much so that you can easily distort the speakers. If you swap speakers, chances are they'll run at a different ohmage, and get less power from the amplifiers (I've done this, it sounded worse after I was done)

You've got two options:

a) Buy a new deck with built in amplifier. Most say 50x4, you can expect somewhere around 20x4 because decks put out jack isht for what they're rated, Buy new speakers.

b) Buy an amp (preferably at least 50x2), Buy some wiring, Buy new speakers, options-(RCAs, line level adapter)

However, there is a 3rd option, I myself have never gotten it to work and it could prove to be worse (or better) in the future, is to find the impendence of your current speakers (I'm guessing 2ohms, but I don't know for sure). That way you wouldn't have any problem with your power being messed with because you have the same ohm load. This would allow you to get new speakers, replace your old ones, and have 0 issues with power halving from ohm loads.

If none of the above made any sense to you, it'd be easier to go with option a) or b), unless someone already knows the impendence of the stock maxima speakers, and says "go buy 2ohm eclipse 6.5's".

I agree with everyone here except you!
get yourself a nice amp! Even $300 speakers will sound like walkman if you don't have a amp!
Get yourself a nice amp & 6.5 component set!

i bought 2 sets of diamond audio 6.5" componets for like 350.. ive had a bunch of diffent speakers since ive had crazy systems in every car ive had. i gotta say the diamonds are worth the money. but.. u NEED to get yourself an amp. ill tell ya one thing ive learned when it comes to systems. its alot cheaper to buy good stuff the first time around then to buy cheaper stuff "just for now" and still not be happy with it. if you want good sound and not go totally broke, id suggest a 6.5" component set for the front, any kind of decent speakers for the rear just for rear fill, and 2 12's. i dont know why guys r tellin you to get a 50 watt amp?? i wouldnt get anything smaller than like 400 for the interior, and 600 for a box. just take it one step at a time. i got the two 6.5" componets with a fosgate 600a4 to and 4 10" pheonix gold x'max's with a fosgate 1100a2 andi still want more.. lol look on ebay and on the forums in here.. you can find plenty of good used stuff cheap.. good luck

Wow.....Are those Diamond power hungry or something, or is it just because Fosgate Amps suck???

I've got a PPI Amp running 4x50 to both sets of components in my car, (Focals, which are AMAZING) (50 watts per Mid and Tweet) and it's so loud that I can't turn it up all the way before it distorts without hurting myself....actually, it just doesn't distort anyway....Amps at 1/3 gain.

I also scored 1st place at the local RTA comp with this setup, and have an SPL of 125...plenty loud.

And we never said 50 watt amp, we said 50 watts per speaker for 1 set of components....50x2 = 100 watts...more than enough on a good, not peak rated (like fosgate) amp.

If they rated a PPI PC4400 (4x50) like Fosgate rates their amps, it would be a 200x4 amp...OK, maybe I'm exaggerating....100x4....nonetheless, it really depends on the amp brands.

Zapco - Rock
PPI - Rock
Phoenix Gold - Older Stuff Rocks
Linear - Rock
SoundStream - Marginal (Some nice high-end models)
Fosgate - Suck
Kicker - Low-End Sounstreams, basically
Orion - mixed, depending on what you pay.
Majestic - Only thing worse than a Fosgate.

Although, from what I've personally heard, Diamonds do sound very warm and friendly.....nice speakers....not as nice as 165KS Focals, but close.

Oh yeah, and this is a total flame mail on Fosgates....but I only speak the truth.

Nope...1/3 of the guys in here are in High School and can't afford a real amp, that's all.

I guess you people forgot what the point of this thread is. It's not about who got the best stereo system (personally I don't care), we are trying to help a fellow maxima enthusiast pick some nice speakers for his car.
If you want to flame each other please use Private Messaging or email.

Thank you and have a good night.

Just making sure he doesn't buy a bad amp, that's all.

And no, you've got a Maxima..you got that part right.
all my PPI amps cost $3500.....so what?

I'm ending the conversation from here.

Poster of this thread:

It's all semantics. Go out and experiment with different setups you can afford, and buy what you like. Just be careful not to buy something that is rated incorrectly (like fosgate), sounds bad (Pioneer coaxiles), and is not durable (No-name brands).

You should be able to get a decent setup that sounds good for under $400....

Have a nice day....I'm unsubscribing now...I'm sorry I took that rant too far, and I'm sorry it turned into an argument. If you like Fosgates, then that's your choice. I personally like amps that have been proven in competitions and by the truly hardcore competitors. But most people can't afford that...or in some people's cases, got ripped off....I can understand that.

Desubscribing now.

Have a good night.

$150 for all 4 speakers?

On the cheap end ($150 cheap ) I'd try Pioneer. I've used TS-A1668's and TS-A1705's from Pioneer and I think they're very good for the price.

Being more concerned about going fast and being on a budget means that I skimp on car audio. I've heard Diamond Audio Hex's, BA Pro Series, a/d/s/ and other expensive ones... and my poor self will have to settle for Pioneer or Soundstream SPL.

me too, you should really try to control yourself as you were the one (surprise, surprise) being argumentative in the first place.
