Suspension Components : Explanations Needed

I'm gonna sound like an idiot, but all the hundreds of posts and replies on this board about suspension has got me all confused. I need someone to give me clear and simple definitions of : Springs
Struts
Shocks
I am pretty sure I know what all these things are and their purposes but i want to clear up my confusion. Thanks.

Re: Suspension Components : Explanations Needed

Shocks (rear), Struts (front) absorb road vibrations, etc. Use gas pressure in a tube to do it, springs control height, ride quality, perforamnce, handling. Shocks and struts mount on the inside of the spring and mount to the rear (solid beam) axel and front control arms.

Just to add to what has already been said:

The 4th gen Maxima uses struts up front, and shocks in the rear. And of course, there are springs on all four corners.
