how do you know when to replace control arm?
Sometimes when I turn to the right, there's a horrible scratching noise coming from the passenger tire area. Like metal scratching against metal. Also it happens sometimes when I brake. It's not the brakes or caliper. They're both ok. ~2 weeks ago I changed the strut insulator and bearing. That and the endbar sway link have been changed (ever).
One friend says it could be the lower control arm. I don't know when that'll need to be replaced (I'm sure soon though...)
Another says that it could be the axle / axle bearing.
Neither of them have heard it, I've just described it to them as I have to you guys.
Axle and everything looks ok (visually).
Any ideas? It makes me cry everytime I hear it...also kinda embarrasing.

It sounds like it could be the dust guard behind the brake rotors. If they are rubbing the rotor you will hear a grinding sound coming from that tire. To fix this, simple push back (Away from you) on the dusk shield until it no longer is in contact with the rotor. You do not want to do this after driving the car as the guard will be HOT!!
The control arm doesn't go bad per say, but the bushing on either end do. If the bushings were to go bad you would hear more of a thud sound or metal on metal rattle not scratching and your handling would be sloppy.
Hope that helps

Yeah, I thought so too. But it also happens even if I'm just braking - like at a traffic light or stop sign. Took the tire off today and didn't seem like it could be that dust guard.
