y-pipe talk

So I'm looking to add more horsepower to my 99% bone stock Gxe and I ran across this in the stickies
"An aftermarket Y-pipe is the best bang for the buck power upgrade for the Maxima"
good advice since good headers & an 00vi are out the question atm $$$, but an aftermarket y/b pipe may be in the future...

I found stillen, warpspeed, cattman, & budget to name a few make pipes, & they all say the same thing "we're the best" but which y- pipe really delivers the best real world results?? not lab tests or butt dynos

-- some say 10-15hp increase other say 15-25hp increase

In searching I found posts and a few good articles about y pipes y-pipe article ,this max mods article Maxmods, & Budget y- dyno Budget dyno After years of mods which one is a stand out favorite? although I must say for $200 bones /w free s&h this eBay warpspeed is catching my eye Ebay warpspeed ypipe

thoughts inputs on choosing a y-pipe
y pipe guys jump in

also, i read a lot about “bees in a can” term

to clear up is that fart-can honda sound /w a 8' tip ?

cattman is the recognized top dog. i believe budget exhaust to be the best value option.

i also think that anyone investing in a y-pipe should spend the extra cash to get a stainless steel unit.

and yes, "bees in a can" is that "fart-can honda sound"

Why does that auction say the y-pipe fits a 2001 but then also lists other years? A 2001 y-pipe wouldn't fit on your car...

cattman is more of the name brand rather than "top dog". between cattman, budget and warpspeed, they are all the same performance wise IMO. i got a budget and love it. I dont know why someone would pay alot more for a cattman. the reason i chose budget over warpspeed is because i heard the budget has much less of the bees in the can sound....and no...that is not the same thing as the honda fart can sound. the bees in the can sound is exactly what it says, its a sound that sounds like bees in a hollow tin can. a high buzzing sound.

but yes you should def spend the extra 50 or so bucks and get a stainless steel pipe. that 200 ebay pipe is aluminized steel.

i loved my decision and my advice is to order a stainless steel budget y pipe.

Complete crap or worth a shot?

I've read about all the different y pipes and which is the best and what not, but got on ebay and found these....
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-01...QQcmdZViewItem
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Compl...QQcmdZViewItem
Im guessing they are junk, but they look decent and was wondering if you guys thought it might be worth the money to find out??

if those links dont work just search ebay motors for maxima y pipe

basically its stainless steal headers and a mandrel bent y pipe for $170 or $200

lemme know what you y pipe guys think

ive heard the headers dont do ****. the y pipe 'looks' alright but its one of those things where id be very iffy. couple questionable things are fitment and bees in the can sound.

youll never be sure until you try it...or someone who has bought it chimes in (but i havent heard of anyone buying that)

because it's ebay....guys, have some respect for your car. Get nice pipes and not ebay quality pipes. If you want good headers and a pipe get cattman. If you want just the y-pipe get budget or cattman. Don't get ebay cause it's cheap. That's exactly what your car will be, cheap. Remember, it's cheaper for a reason....

Bee's in the can noise is the vibrations of the pipe. Some say due to quality, but some get it on certain pipes and others don't. Hp gains are technically unknown. Dyno's show that headers and y-pipe combo gained 20hp but no one has dyno'd the increase of hp with just a y-pipe. You seem like you want to go cheap since you said headers and 00vi are out. Just get a budget y-pipe. Good quality and you shouldn't be disappointed. Now lets lock this thread since it's probably the 100 thread on this topic.

I don't even know what half of the said....

OP. As I said, this has been covered hundreds of times. People have different experience with all pipes. All I know is that ebay is not a place you want to buy performance parts. Stop asking who has the best pipes and buy one. I told you that budget and cattman are thes best (In most peoples eyes). Get one of the two and be done with this thread.

considering that all pipes are basically designed the same, the only real difference is going to be the materials used and the quality of construction. if you want the best go cattman, if you want a quality affordable piece go budget. i really haven't heard anybody ever say "man this y-pipe sucks" but those are recognized as the best as far as quality rather than performance.

i have been communicating with budget. they are still in business. they did have some supply issues but they are back in gear. i will be stocking them soon at www.a32shop.com. one thing i did notice is that they are not as cheap as they used to be since the canadian dollar has caught up with us.

Just pick up a warpspeed or budget y-pipe, then use the other money for a drop/catback/etc.

I have a wspd from ebay. I bought it because the factory coupler had failed and figured, why not? Cheaper than a factory replacement at $200 shipped and maybe a little bump in performance.

Other than the Y, the car is a completely stock 98 SE. With it, the car dynoed at the wheels at 159/169 hp/tq. Not bad imho. DK the before numbers. With the stock muffler, it sounds ok, better, but not great, just ok. Reminds me more of a buick grand prix than a G35 coupe.

Oh, and that pull was on regular gas...

I have the warpspeed aluminized steel. about a year old. NO BEES.

performance among the y-pipes won't differ. you're paying for quality.

I have had 0 problems with the warpspeed.

just my $.02

When i got my warpspeed it was cheaper than a budget one 200 flat with high flow cat. Dallas at warpspeed helped me alot and the quality was great. Never had bees sound at all just a little drone because im unresonated right now. Honestly if i were doing it again i'd get a wsp y, high flo cat, and budget b with resonator. That should be good for about 25-30hp.
